With an ever-changing legal landscape across the United States, the cannabis industry has exploded. As it has, two of the plant’s compounds, or cannabinoids, have taken the spotlight: tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol. While each of these cannabinoids offers its own plethora of potential benefits to consumers, THC and CBD are only two of literally hundreds of others. One less common and less understood compound is cannabinol. If you have never heard of CBN, you are not alone. Nonetheless, this compound may also have a lot to offer. Without further ado, here are seven facts you should know about it.

Table of Contents

  • 1. It Has a Slightly More Psychoactive Response Than CBD, but Much Less Than THC
  • 2. It Has More of a Sedative Effect Than CBD
  • 3. It Stimulates Appetite
  • 4. It May Alleviate Pain
  • 5. It Was the First Cannabinoid Scientists Identified
  • 6. It Comes From THC
  • 7. Its Environment Matters More Than Its Genetics

1. It Has a Slightly More Psychoactive Response Than CBD, but Much Less Than THC

First things first, “psychoactive” does not mean “intoxicating.” When something has a “psychoactive” effect, that simply means it has an impact on the mind. With CBN, you can expect more of a psychoactive response than you would typically experience with CBD alone, but still much less of a response than with THC. That said, even if you experience mind-altering effects like falling asleep more quickly, CBN will not lead to the intoxicating “high” feeling that THC consumers experience.

2. It Has More of a Sedative Effect Than CBD

If you are looking to catch some zs, a CBN tincture might be a better choice than CBD alone. Although there are still only a limited number of studies available, initial findings show that CBN has the potential to be a powerful sedative. On the other hand, taking CBD alone tends to make people feel more alert. Results change, however, when you combine compounds. Early findings also show promising sleep outcomes when manufacturers combined CBN with CBD.

3. It Stimulates Appetite

Another major difference between CBN and CBD has to do with eating. While one commonly reported benefit of CBD is its tendency to suppress people’s appetites, it is more likely for CBN to have the opposite effect. Depending on what kind of health ailments you are dealing with, CBN from Common Ground CBD may be able to assist if you are struggling with hunger.

4. It May Alleviate Pain

One area that CBN, CBD and THC all shine in is pain relief. Like the more popular cannabinoids, CBN also shows a lot of potential in alleviating numerous painful conditions. This is because scientists discovered that CBN has anti-inflammatory and anticonvulsant properties of its own that pain sufferers can benefit from.

5. It Was the First Cannabinoid Scientists Identified

Despite the popularity of CBD and THC, CBN was actually the first cannabinoid scientists ever identified. Back in 1896, researchers isolated the compound before any others. Fun fact: They initially thought it was responsible for the high feeling that really comes from THC.

6. It Comes From THC

While there are several similarities in the potential health benefits of CBN and CBD, cannabis plants produce the two compounds in very different ways. Another thing that makes CBN interesting is that it comes from THC. When you expose THC to light or heat for a significant amount of time, it eventually turns into CBN. How cool is that?

7. Its Environment Matters More Than Its Genetics

When it comes to CBD or THC levels in a cannabis plant, genetics play a big role. With CBN, that is not the case. Unlike the other two compounds, environment is solely responsible for a plant’s CBN levels. Because CBN occurs as a result of light and heat exposure, limiting either of these conditions can result in lower levels.

When you are looking for the best natural pain relief, understanding the different types of cannabinoids and products available can simplify the buying process. If you have additional questions about CBN, ask a salesperson before making your purchase.
