Things to Consider When Getting Temporary Fencing for Your Yard Dog

Dogs love to run. It’s in their nature. They just love to feel the wind blowing over their faces. When travelling in vehicles, dogs delight in sticking their furry mugs outside of the window. They let that sweet, sweet air just flow over their shaggy faces. To our furry little buddies, that airy feeling represents freedom. Unfortunately, in this day and age, we can’t let our slobbering pals run around all willy nilly. There are bylaws in place that make sure that. If our four-legged family members do escape, well, then the evil dog catcher is soon tracking them through the city. Clearly, it’s on us as their humans to do our best to ensure their safety. We microchip them, we tattoo their ears, and we even put dog tags on their collars to make sure they can find their way home if they escape from their yards. All of these solutions are great if our dogs Houdini it out of the yard, but we should make sure they don’t get out in the first place. How do we do that, you ask? It’s simple. We put up a fencing solution that secures them in place and keeps them safe. Here are a few things to consider when getting temporary construction fence for your yard dog.

Enclosure Size – What size of an enclosure is needed? Obviously, you are going to start with the size of your dog.  The enclosure must be high enough that the little furball cannot jump over it.  The American Humane Society suggests a run should be at least 3 feet wide by 10 feet long and 6 feet high. They recommend the width be increased by a foot for dogs over 100 pounds.  Another technique used as a starting point is to measure your puppy’s length and multiply that by 5.  Dogs need to be able to move around freely and lay down and rest when needed. Basically, make the enclosure as big as your yard and wallet will allow.

Privacy – Your dog doesn’t need stimulation. Seeing through the fence could excite the dog and make them want to escape. Just noticing the mail person or a neighbor’s dog, your puppy gets a little overexcited. So you might want to consider materials that provide privacy.  Chain link fences that have materials woven through the grid can impede sightlines, but the links can create a way to climb if your guy is a climber.  Another option is a solid panel fence.

Sturdiness – The enclosure needs to be secure. Here are some tips to consider on how to secure temporary fencing.  Choose a footer that works for your yard. You may want an L shaped footer or concreter footers for additional strength.  Coyote Rollers can be placed on the top of the fence to add a safety feature. It can stop dogs from jumping over the fence as well. One other choice to add sturdiness to the temporary fencing is to use lean-ins.

Can They Get Out? – Check your temporary fence for ways your dog could get out. Your dog may be lonely, may just want to find an adventure or sees something that he believes threatens his safety – or yours. Any of these situations can spur your best friend to bust out of his space.  Your dog is probably brilliant.  Watch him closely for a couple of days to make sure he can’t escape. Eliminate any escape,,, routes. Use materials that do not give the dog something to climb, nothing that provides a “paw” hold. Make sure there are no spots to dig.  Try to make spending time in the enclosure as a positive experience.  Play with him while he is inside it.  Give them treats when putting them in their enclosure and when taking them out. Treats will make being in the space a positive experience.

There are a variety of things to consider when setting up temporary fencing to keep your best friend safe and happy.  Not only do you look at the materials need to make it sturdy, but it must also keep your buddy enclosed.  You also need to keep in mind the size of your dog and most definitely his personality.  A viable enclosure will give you peace of mind that your special friend will be protected and content.
