One-in-five Americans is a Catholic. It is the second-largest religious group next to Evangelical Protestant, making up around 25.4% of the population.

American Catholics Are Nearly 1/3rd of the Congress

As we said above, around 20% of Americans are Catholics. However, their representation in Congress is 30% of the members.

The reason is simple—the average age of a representative is 57.5 years old. For a senator, it is 62.9 years old. Adults are more likely part of the Catholic church within this age range.

American Catholicism Has a Higher Net Loss

The American Catholic church is experiencing a higher loss of members than other religious groups. Around 10% of the country’s adult population are former Catholics. They have either shifted to other religions and spiritual beliefs or none at all.

Other religious groups are not experiencing anything even close to the loss of American Catholicism. Still, the church is gaining more members as 2% of adults convert to the faith.

Most Catholics Demand for Significant Changes

The public perception of Catholics is they are conservative. However, the numbers are saying otherwise. The majority are calling for significant changes in the church.

Around six in ten Catholics believe the church should allow priests to get married. The same people also think women could become priestesses. Meanwhile, three in four Catholics support using artificial birth control.

Members are more divided on the issue of gay and lesbian marriage. Regardless, nearly half support their union.

Discontent in Pope Francis Is Rising

In Vatican facts, American Catholics have a declining opinion of Pope Francis. The lower satisfaction happened because of the way he handled sex abuse scandals in the past years. Only three in ten adults say he is doing an excellent or good job in addressing the issue.

Regardless, the overall opinion of the pope remains high. Around seven in ten adults has a favorable vote.

It is still a 12-point decline. Those with a very favorable opinion of the pope are also down to 30% from as much as 62%.
