When it comes to choosing the right size crane for your project, it is fair to say that size matters. On the other hand, the “bigger is better” mindset certainly does not apply to every situation, and your choice will likely be a bit more complicated than that. The fastest way to make a decision can sometimes be to take your time, which means carefully considering each element that will affect the size of the crane you need.

  • The Characteristics of the Load
  • The Characteristics of the Work Site
  • The Necessary Service and Support

The Characteristics of the Load

When choosing a crane, you have to consider the materials you will be using the crane to move, and the dimensions and weight of the load are the obvious starting point.

All cranes have a limit to how much they can lift, which can vary based on the precise specifications of how the equipment is set up. A competent crane rental services firm will make this information available to help you choose the right machine for your needs. You should request a table or chart showing the load capacity of all the cranes that might fit your project.

The crane company may also be able to provide a diagram of potential outrigger configurations for each crane, showing how they will affect the crane’s lifting ability.

Another fundamental step to selecting a crane of the appropriate size is to think of the load’s other dimensions apart from weight. What will the material’s height and length be? Will you be moving large single objects or big bundles of packaged goods? These questions will affect not only the crane size but possible crane attachments or accessories that will be needed.

The Characteristics of the Work Site

When it comes to choosing an appropriately sized crane, the location is as important as the load. Site characteristics such as rural or urban environment, uneven ground, or maximum height requirements will place constraints on the size and style of crane you can use.

The distance between where your load will be picked up and where you ultimately will set it down also has to be considered. A more mobile crane may be more appropriate on a site where there is a lot of distance between picking up and setting down the materials. This might not work, however, if the ground is rough, boggy or otherwise hard to travel. In that case, a larger crane with a long boom may be a better choice.

Complex worksites may require more than one type of machine. For example, the materials may need to be moved from a crowded environment where there are length and height limitations to another location where the load has to be lifted high over obstacles on the ground.

The qualities of the worksite can be one of the most complicating factors when choosing the right size equipment. This factor alone is a very good reason to have expert guidance when choosing your equipment.

The Necessary Service and Support

Choosing the right size machine is made much easier by working with a good supplier. You need to know that your vendor will supply quality equipment that is in good repair, as well as provide customer service that’s responsive to any questions or additional needs you may have.

Ideally, an experienced crane company can give you useful advice on a crane’s available accessories and tips for stabilizer and outrigger configuration, as well as guidance about using each particular piece of equipment they offer.

The right equipment also needs to be backed up by reliable support. This is yet another important reason to consider the reputation of the company you’ll be relying on for crane rental services.

When unusual equipment difficulties or other obstacles arise on a construction site, you don’t always have time to piece together an acceptable solution on your own. Your crane supplier should have staff ready to help you troubleshoot any unforeseen issues that arise.

Choosing the proper crane size and configuration can be tricky, depending on the complexities of the material being handled as well as the area where the work is being done. The time you put into a well-thought-out choice will pay off in the form of a successful project that’s completed safely, efficiently, and on budget.
