Do you want to support nonprofit organizations, whether you plan to volunteer or provide financial support? You may receive mail, see TV commercials, or receive phone calls from all kinds of organizations. With the massive number of nonprofits you hear about, it can feel overwhelming to choose one or a few to support. Therefore, consider these steps as you choose what charities to support.

Review Your Charity Support Desires

You should understand why you want to support a nonprofit organization and the type of support you want to provide. Consider your financial budget and time availability. Do you want to help one or more organizations? Do you want to give a one-time donation or create a short- or long-term partnership? Is there a project the organization has that you want to support?

You should also consider the ethical, financial, and other standards you expect from the organization. Then, choose your desired level of involvement.

Consider the Causes You Care About

As you research non profit organizations near me, review the list of causes you care about. For example, if you want to help military families, you will choose a different organization than if you want to help animals. You may have a heart for children or individuals with developmental disabilities. Choose the organizations that support causes you care about.

Conduct Your Research

First, review the reputation of the organizations that interest you. Search for any legal or ethical issues in the company’s past. Research the nonprofit’s director and executives. Find out about their volunteer programs and how these individuals get treated.

Find out what portion of your giving goes directly to the people or cause you want to support. For example, some charitable organizations use 60% or more of your donation to pay staff, while others send 95% to the individuals the nonprofit seeks to help. Find those that have lean staff and use your donations properly.

As you do your due diligence, you can gain peace that your money and time go to nonprofit organizations that follow through and provide the help they say they do.
