A Guide to Work Restroom Cleanliness

Restrooms are a must in any workplace; nature’s call is one of those things you cannot avoid, and it is important to make it more convenient. You need to keep in mind that a workplace is a shared place, and you have to keep others in mind too.

It is common to find people who have contracted diseases as a result of badly maintained workplace bathrooms. There are diseases such as Salmonella, E. Coli (Diarrhea), Shigella, and even more serious ones like Necrotizing Fasciitis (This is serious because it is the flesh-eating bacteria). You can avoid all of this by following proper restroom etiquette. Ensuring that you have appropriate washroom accessories will enable your staff to maintain a good level of cleanliness.

Below are some workplace restroom etiquettes you and your employees should follow to make sure that the office remains healthy.

  1. Always washing hands

This is the most common thing you need to keep in mind and not only in the restroom. Make sure you wash your hands when using any restroom even at home.

Are you comfortable shaking hands with someone who has not washed their hands after coming out of the restroom? Can you eat with such hands? Washing hands with soap is going to keep you and those around you safe.

2. Cleaning up after yourself

There is no one who wants to enter and know what the last person did. Muddy floors, toilet paper everywhere, and the unflushed bowl isn’t something that someone would like to see when they enter the restroom.

Cleaning up after yourself is important. This doesn’t mean thoroughly cleaning the restroom every time you use it, but leaving the restroom in a good enough condition so that those using it after you can do it without wincing.

3. Flushing with the lid closed

It is common practice to flash after you use the restroom, but why should you always flush the bowl with the lid closed?

When the toilet is flushed, bacteria and germs get aerosolized. If the lid is open when you flush, they are going to disseminate into the surroundings which creates an unsanitary environment, which is going to harm visitors and employees.

4. Avoid chatting or texting in the restroom

The restroom is not a place for working; you have an entire office to do that. Always leave your work outside when visiting the washroom.

Maybe there are people who want to use the washrooms after you are done, which makes it rude to use your phone inside. It is also not going to leave a good impression when the person on the other end of the call hears tap noises and flushes.
