Computer vision syndrome refers to eye health and other physical and mental health issues caused by the use of computers.

This disease is also known as digital eye strain and is a common disease these days at work. According to the National Occupational Safety and Health Institute, people who work more than 3 hours on digital devices are likely to get the disease. And the disturbing fact is that almost every one of us uses computers more than that. So we have to follow the preventive measures to avoid the disease.

The following are some steps that should be implemented by every person in the workplace. Even you work at home, these rules are for you too.

Eyewear Safety Program By The Employer

As employers are bound to protect their employees from any potential work dangers; it’s their responsibility to act in this regard too. Organizations should launch a safety program that provides safety eyewear to their employees. Many companies are offering RX Safety Eyewear Program. So if the employees work on computer screens, employers should get them safety eyeglasses immediately.

Wear Anti-Glare Glasses

Besides the legal responsibility of the employers, it’s also employees’ responsibility to use these safety glasses at work. Computer screens contain specific glare that is harmful to the eyes. Even if the company does not provide safety eyewear, you should get it yourself. Many authentic retailers provide computer glasses such as Eyeweb Safety, 3M, Uvex, and USA safety glasses, etc. So don’t risk your eyes at any cost!

Practice 20/20/20 Rule

American Optometric Association has designed a safety rule that is beneficial for any person working on digital screens. This rule states that a computer user should see at any other object located 20 meters every 20 minutes away for 20 seconds. It helps eyes to relieve from the screen. By practicing this rule, we can work on screens with more concentration. This rule is beneficial for every age group.

Keep Blinking Eyes During Work

Another reason behind this syndrome is staring at the screen continuously without blinking eyes. Young professionals do it frequently. Health experts have recommended blinking eyes during work. No matter how long you work on the computer, make it a habit to blink the yes after every few minutes. While we do blinking, our eyes get a quick rest and refreshed.

Sit Properly In Front Of The Computer

Incorrect sitting posture also makes us a target of possible eye disease. Review your sitting posture at work. Do you sit too close to the screen? Is the screen placed in front of the yes or not? Review your workstation and then make the changes accordingly.

Use proper lighting

Sometimes, people work in an improper light. They may be working in a very bright or dark environment. Both conditions are not feasible for the eyes. So review your workspace lighting. If it is not according to the safe lighting, ask the management to provide sufficient lighting at work.

Adjust Your Computer Resolution

A minor change in your system’s resolution settings can make a big impact on your eyes. If you don’t know about resolution, ask an expert to adjust your computer resolution. Setting the resolution to a recommended level will save your eyes from strain.

Wash Your Eyes Frequently

Washing the eyes with water is also a good cure for any eye danger. Make it your habit to wash the eyes every few hours during the work. Water cleans any dust or concrete particle present in the eyes. It also freshens up our eyes. So don’t forget to wash the eyes with clean water multiple times in the office.

Bi-Annual Eye Checkup

Consulting a licensed ophthalmologist can relieve you from any eye disease. Whether your company offers or not, visit an eye doctor at least two times a year. This bi-annual eye checkup will diagnose and inform you about your eye health.
