6 Must-Haves When It Comes to Football Gear

Playing football is a great way to stay physically active while feeling like part of a team. The only downside of football is—you guessed it—injuries.

If you’ve ever watched football, you know that all players look bulky on the field. That’s because they wear lots of padding to protect their bodies. Football is a contact sport, and collisions can occur on almost every play.

So, what kind of protection do you need to play football? Start with these six essential pieces of football gear and go from there.

1. Helmet

The helmet is undoubtedly the most important piece of gear in football. Modern football helmets consist of a hard outer shell with thick padding on the inside. This will help you avoid head blows and concussions.

A helmet also has a rigid facemask made of coated carbon steel. Your helmet can also include jaw pads and a visor for added protection. Keep in mind that only clear football visors are legal for high school game use.

2. Mouth Guard

The mouth guard acts as a shock absorber that protects your teeth and jaw. It also provides some additional protection against concussions.

As of the mid-20th century, mouth guards are mandatory in football. You must wear it at all times during play. Get one in a highly visible color and with a keeper strap that you can attach to the facemask.

3. Shoulder Pads

Shoulder pads have a hard plastic shell with thick padding. As of about two decades ago, they weigh less than four pounds.

These pads come in two main types: flat and cantilevered. Flat pads are smaller and less restrictive, which is perfect for receivers and quarterbacks. Cantilevered pads are better for players receiving more direct collisions. : For some extra arm coverage (and to keep you warm), you can also accessorise with arm sleeves.

4. Jockstrap

A jockstrap is also known as an athletic supporter, or simply a cup. It’s required in a few other contact sports, such as baseball.

When it comes to avoiding football injuries, a jockstrap is a must-have. It protects a player’s pelvic area. It’s particularly useful for male players, as it helps them avoid testicular injuries.

5. Thigh Pads

Thigh pads are another mandatory type of football pads. They help protect the players’ thighs from nasty collisions.

Thigh pads tend to be light and flexible, though their thick foam still ensures protection. They have a self-adhesive backing that keeps them together. These pads also come in girdles, which include sets of two pads.

6. Cleats

Like in most sports, cleats are a key part of safe football gear. Check your league’s guidelines to find out which types of cleats they allow.

If you have the option, get rubber cleats. They tend to be more durable, provide more traction, and help you get lift-off. All these features make it easier for players to run faster on the field.

Other Football Gear You May Need

These days, football gets kind of a bad rap when it comes to injuries. If you wear all the gear from this list, though, the injury potential is minimal. All you’re left with is a fun, enjoyable game.
