5 Under-The-Radar Coins Worth Collecting

Over the last few years, more and more people have discovered the joys of coin collecting. As a result, coin prices and rarities are changing as new collectors enter the market.

With the marketplace in flux, it can be hard for collectors to find coins worth collecting. However, a canny coin collector should view this as a benefit rather than an obstacle.

A changing market gives hobbyists a reason to reevaluate their coins. There are all kinds of collectible coins worth a fortune thanks to the influx of new collectors. That includes coins that have mostly flown under the radar until now.

Keep reading to learn about five rare coins that are worth your time, whether you’re new to the hobby or a long-time collector.

1. 1864 Two-Cent Coins

When you think of American coinage, you probably think of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. You might even think of fifty-cent pieces and silver dollars. What about two-cent coins, though?

Most people don’t realize that America had a two-cent piece, but it went into production in 1864. It’s notable not only for its strange denomination, but because it was the first American coin to say “In God We Trust.”

2. Lincoln Cents

There are two major variants of the Lincoln cent. The more famous version is the 1909-S VDB penny; it caused an outcry when it was printed due to the large size of designer Victor David Brenner’s initials.

The 1943 Lincoln steel cent is also popular among collectors. They were created to conserve copper during World War II; while they aren’t rare, their unique origin makes them silver coins worth collecting.

3. 1883 Liberty Head Nickel

The 1883 Liberty Head nickel has one defining feature: it doesn’t feature the word ‘cents’ anywhere on the coin. The only information about the coin’s denomination is the large Roman numeral V on one face.

Unscrupulous people noticed that the nickel was roughly the same size as a five-dollar coin that was in circulation at the time, leading many to try to pass it off as the more valuable coin.

4. Perth Mint Silver Coins

Don’t focus solely on American coinage–there are many foreign coins worth collecting! Perth Mint Australia silver coins are a great example. The Perth Mint creates many different collectors coins.

5. 1908 “No Motto” St. Gaudens Coin

The St. Gaudens coin was originally minted in 1907, but it had several issues: they were difficult to strike correctly and didn’t stack well. As a result, they were slightly redesigned in 1908, leading to this rare coin.

The initial 1908 St. Gaudens coin lacked the words “In God We Trust.” It wasn’t added until the end of 1908, so the version that lacks the motto is a great collector’s piece!
