WHAT ARE SUPERFOODS?
Superfoods are no magic or newly created food items. They are naturally available seeds, berries, fruits that we have forgotten or are unpopular among society due to the introduction of more processed foods. Thus, any natural food rooted in science and has healthy compounds with properties like anti-inflammation, anti-oxidants, and rich in fiber can be termed as superfoods. Superfoods are food items like chia seeds, green tea, broccoli, blueberry, etc. that are tasty enough and at the same time healthy for your body. They can be regularly consumed along with your diet and workout to experience better results. At the same time, never think that our normal healthy foods such as spinach, papaya, and pineapple aren’t healthy enough to support your health goals. You can have anything natural, and be aware of anything that is commercialised, and healthy such as Atta Maggi, vegetable Maggi, veg cutlet, nuts chocolate bar, etc. Here is a list of good superfoods you can add to your diet to help you achieve your weight loss goals. Try them out with proper advice.
- Chia Seeds:
It is a tasty and simple seed that can be easily added to boost your weight loss and increase your taste. They are high in proteins and keep you satiated for the whole day avoiding eating too much or binge eating. You can consume chia seeds soaked in normal water as the first drink in the morning. Or, you can sprinkle it on the top of your smoothies or rose milk to make your food Instagrammy at the same time healthy too. Chia seeds are also a great source of antioxidants that can help you protect your heart and liver. The major element that boosts weight loss is the abundant soluble fibre that turns into a gel after absorbing water. It stays in your digestive tract and makes you feel full. So, just try following this diet if you are overeating or binge eating frequently.
- Spinach:
India is an agricultural country and we are gifted to get access to different varieties of spinach that are rich in different nutrients. Some green leaves such as Moringa leaves are rich in iron, while others are rich in magnesium, fibre, or potassium. They are extremely healthy and promote weight loss. You can add them to your salads or even saute with a small amount of salt, garlic, mustard seeds, cold-pressed sesame oil, gingelly oil, olive oil, or any other edible cooking oil except the refined ones. It is super tasty and can act as a good side dish for your lunch or dinner. Some South Indians and Malayalis include greens in their diet by mixing them with rice.
- Eggs:
Right from the traditional gym masters and movies, we have been seeing our favourite heroes drinking raw eggs after their workout. An egg is a great source of protein. Since protein takes a very long time to digest, you will feel full and do not find yourself unnecessarily eating junk or any other food. It also helps build lean muscle tissue making your body look more toned and healthy.
- Chickpeas:
Chickpeas are another preferred source of protein for vegetarians and are highly affordable. We as Indians should use more of these traditional foods in our diets rather than going in search of protein powders. You can use supplements, but when the nutrient is available naturally in our foods, we can try adding them regularly alongside our supplements too. You can just boil it with salt and eat, or make curries with chickpeas for your roti, dosa, or even rice.
- Sweet Potatoes:
Potatoes being a major part of the Indian diet takes various roles such as a sabzi for rice, gravies for rotis, chapatis, parathas, and fried snacks, but you might feel bored eating them in a row. So, you can try sweet potatoes that are rich in complex carbs and fibre that will provide the needed nutrients to your body and send the right signals to your brain. But, take care of the preparation method, like avoiding cooking it with refined seed oils, try to use butter or clarified butter as they make for a stable cooking medium for taste. You can also boil them, saute them, and consume them.
It is evident that most of the above-mentioned food items are rich in natural nutrients such as protein, complex carbohydrates, fibre, and good fat. On the other hand, fast foods are high in sugar, bad fat, simple carbs, and are termed empty calories. The nutrients in these processed and fast foods are easy to digest, and your body seeks more food, again and again, resulting in overeating, and weight gain. So, even if you find any other foods that are rich in nutrients that take time to digest, use them to promote your weight loss.
