In particular, vitamin D may help reduce your risk of heart disease and multiple sclerosis (MS). It’s also been suggested that vitamin D could also help reduce your likelihood of catching the flu.

How Much Vitamin D Should I Take Daily?

The amount of vitamin D daily that you’re getting is measured in either micrograms (mcg) or international units (IU). 40 IU of vitamin D is the equivalent of 1 mcg.

The following are the recommended amounts of vitamin D daily per age group:

  • Infants (below one year old): 400 IU (10 mcg)
  • Children and adults (1-70 years old): 600 IU (15 mcg)
  • Adults aged 70 and older: 800 IU (20 mcg)

It can be difficult to measure your vitamin D daily intake. If you want to be sure you’re getting enough, consider taking a supplement.

How to Get More Vitamin D

One of the easiest and most common ways to get vitamin D is by getting some sunlight. If you live in a sunny climate, then getting plenty of outdoor time can provide you with lots of vitamin D. Be sure to wear SPF and protective clothing.

If you’re unable to get sunlight, you can also incorporate vitamin D-rich foods into your diet. Here are a few great things to eat if you’re looking to get more vitamin D daily:

  • Vitamin D-fortified milk
  • Egg yolks
  • Fatty fishes such as tuna and salmon
  • Beef liver
  • Mushrooms
  • Cheese
