Navigation is the most important aspect of an application. There are many things associated with navigations such as accessibility, readability, etc. This can be achieved through a good navigation ux design. A good user experience (ux) design helps customer acquisition, customer retention, optimizes development time and cost. Therefore, it is essential to focus on user experience while designing a website. Here are some navigation tips that help to improve user experience.
Table of Contents
Breadcrumbs
The breadcrumbs are navigation aids that help in orienting visitors within the website. What are breadcrumbs? They are navigation systems that show the user’s location on the website. Breadcrumbs encourage people to visit more pages.
Tiny menus on large screens
Today, the computer monitors are huge in size. Therefore, it is essential to design big menus. Accommodate more space for menus. If not, they will be lost in the huge screen and users will not be able to locate them.
Familiar location
Always place the menus in familiar positions. For instance, it has become common to place the vertical navigation bars in the left side of the website. The users expect to find certain user interface elements such as contact us, sign up, subscribe in common locations. For instance, they can be found at the top of the screen or at the bottom. It is essential to fulfil such expectations.
Interactive menu links
The menus should be tappable or clickable. If not, users may not even realize that it is a menu. Always keep the menu design simple and flat. Be traditional while designing menus. The visitors are used to certain common menu designs. Moving away from such designs will backfire. Avoid creating decorative menus.
Visual weight
The menus used in website navigation should have good visual weight. That is, they should be visible clearly. The need to add visual weight to the menu reduces if they are placed in familiar locations.
Reduce the color saturation or white space to make the menu noticeable. Avoid bringing in graphics while designing the menu.
Text colors
Use text colors that contrast with the background color. Also, follow the traditional user guidelines in fixing text colors. For instance, differentiate the visited links with purple color. Pick the colors wisely so that the users do not squint at the screen to read the menu.
Link labels
Avoid using decorated words in menu link labels. Keep them simple and easy to understand. Use terminologies that describe content and features. Make sure the link labels are easy to scan.
Mega Menu
A large website should allow users to preview lower-level content. Use mega menus to save users’ time in such cases. Mega menus are expandable menus that list many choices in a two-dimensional drop-down layout.
Local navigation menus
Make related pages available in the local navigation menu. For instance, if the visitor wants to compare related products, he should be able to do it on the same page.
Visual design
The visual designs of the website such as font weights, color, font styles should be consistent across the navigation.
