Yes, You Can Still Decorate for Fall When Selling Your Home!

If you’re like us, autumn isn’t just a time of year – it’s a lifestyle. Yes, it’s true that September 22 was the first official day of autumn, it’s never too late to decorate for the season! We have a few tips from top agents regarding how to decorate for this time of year. These tips can be used regardless if you’re buying or selling a home.

Gourdes galore

Autumn is that time of year where we’re bombarded with pumpkins, but they aren’t the only type of gourds that can be used to decorate with! You can purchase ornamental gourds at your favorite farmers market to decorate with. You can paint them, carve them, or just place them along walkways, on patio steps, or in flower beds.

Note: If you prefer not to use fresh gourds indoors, you can find decorative glass or ceramic gourds at a home goods shop.

Wreaths

Wreaths aren’t just for Christmas – they can be used year round! We like to hang wreaths made from twigs, acorns, pinecones, and corn husks on the front door to make the front entryway more welcoming. If you’re a crafty person, you could make your own wreath out of things you have in the yard, but you can definitely use artificial materials or purchase pre-made wreaths as well.

Throw pillows

Outdoor throw pillows can make any run of the mill patio set feel a little more inviting. Not only do throw pillows spruce up the front patio furniture, it adds visual interest as well because you can choose from a variety of patterns and colors.  Just be sure that you’re choosing pillows made specifically for outdoor use. These pillows should be made from materials like polyester, PVC, Marine vinyl or Olefin.

Autumn flowers

When we think of autumn flowers, mums are probably the first variety that comes to mind. Although you can find mums in a variety of colors, there are also a bunch of other flowers you could plant as well. We particularly love pansies, cosmos, dahlias and sunflowers! Your best bet, though, is to find autumn flowers and plants that grow native to your particular neck of the woods to achieve the best results.

Lights

Outdoor lighting can go a long way in changing the look of your yard. While it’s not prudent to change light fixtures every season, you can change the lightbulbs from stark white to a warm white to give your yard a warmer glow. If you have lanterns along the walkways or on the porch, you can go one step further by using flicker flame light bulbs.

Natural decor elements

Around this time of year, hay bales, corn stalks, and pumpkins are go-to decorations. These items can be used in the usual fashion, but why not be a little more creative? For example, there are so many different ways you can decorate with corn, using dried leaves from corn stalks in window boxes for an added touch or creating a wreath or garland using colorful corn cobs and their leaves. You may also incorporate mini dried flower arrangements on coffee tables or even in the kitchen to give the house a more rustic vibe.

Firewood or logs

It’s that time of year when fireplaces and woodstoves become more than just a focal point. Instead of leaving the piles of wood in a haphazard stack, you can use a decorative firewood rack to spruce up your porch. Of course if you prefer, you could create a storage area and use a burlap curtain to keep the space looking neat and tidy but the wood would still be easily accessible.

Autumnal decor elevates home comfort

Decorating the outside of your home is a great way to boost curb appeal without taking on any huge renovation projects. While some of these tips won’t boost overall value, it will pique a buyer’s interest because when they see how nice the yard looks, they’ll wonder what the interior of your home looks like. Even if you aren’t selling, pulling up to a house that’s decorated nicely is always a great feeling, don’t you think? We do!
