Working in Digital Marketing: The Basics

There are many different services and roles within digital marketing, and each requires many skills and characteristics. From online reputation management to content creation and SEO, digital marketing could be your next dream career. If you are considering changing careers, adapting current skills, or moving up in the world of marketing, here are just a few basic things to consider about working in digital marketing.

What is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing is a form of marketing that involves utilizing the internet and digital platforms and products to advertise and promote a huge range of brands, services, or products. With the huge increase in internet users, advertising has also adapted from billboards and newspapers to appearing right on your phone screen. These other methods of marketing are, of course, still used, as not everyone has access to the internet, but digital marketing is one of the most common forms of marketing. There are many benefits to digital marketing for brands and companies, and one of these is the ability to reach large audiences at a low cost. Digital marketing campaigns can be seen all over the internet and social media sites, and there are fewer costs involved, such as printing and labor, which makes it an attractive marketing option for many brands and businesses. However, will all these digital marketing campaigns out there, the ones you create need to be unique, eye-catching, and effective.

How to get involved

If you want to kick start your career in digital marketing or move into that industry from another job, there are plenty of ways you can do this. Online digital marketing courses are very popular, as they allow you to study at home, in your own time. You can also work towards growing your portfolio of skills with short courses in specific areas of software, like Photoshop, which looks great on your CV and provide you with practical examples of work you have produced. There are also plenty of entry-level positions, apprenticeships, and internships in many different companies or agencies, which can help you get some great practical experience, as well as networking and building relationships with companies and clients alike.

The option to work as a freelancer is also available, which can allow you to pick and choose your clients, projects, and working hours. This may mean you will only be able to offer certain services or will need a large range of skills, but being a freelancer comes with many benefits, as well as challenges. You could start working with an agency and branch out on your own later on, after you have gained experience and skills and established yourself within the industry.

Different roles

Within digital marketing, there are many different jobs and roles. Generally, you will need a good understanding of a variety of topics, techniques, and methods, especially if you work within an agency. Here are just a few of the tasks and services you could be providing in digital marketing.

Online Reputation Management is the process of managing the reputation of an individual, company, or business online. Sometimes, negative press, reviews, or articles can massively impact a business. Many people rely on reviews to help them make decisions as to services or products, and the worse reviews or articles that appear when the name or keywords are searched, the less likely you are to use this service or business. The purpose of ORM is to push these negative articles off of the first page of search results. The first page of SERPs is where the majority of people stop, usually clicking on the first few results. Pushing content to the second page means that fewer people will interact with these articles. ORM can be for anyone, from celebrities to doctors, brands, and businesses. The techniques and methods involved vary depending on the situation and clients. For example, online reputation management for doctors involves maintaining a positive online presence through a good quality website, regular content creation, and managing and responding to feedback and reviews. If a person or company is being wrongfully negatively represented online, ORM can help to manage this damage and impact.
