Understanding the Working Function of a USB Port Hub and its Different Types

A USB hub is a way to fulfill the increased connectivity needs. It has expanded the connectivity of a single USB port for many years and has been serving efficiently for the purpose for many years. Particularly, USB hubs are used with computers, laptops and other electronic devices where there are limited connectivity resources and it needs to be expanded. For this purpose, the USB hub comes into play. So, a USB hub is an adapter that contains many additional ports for that purpose. You will find USB hubs containing 3 to 7 ports. For example, your laptop consists of 3 USB ports and you connect a USB 3 Hub port then in total you will have 6 ports and 6 points of connectivity.

Additionally, this hub also provides connections for HDMI like a USB 3 Hub HDMI, VGA, ethernet, SD, and other types of memory cards. Therefore, the USB hub provides computers with a connection with other interfaces as well as expanding its connectivity capacity. The latest USB hubs have USB 3 capability and a USB4 is on its way.

USB Hub Operations

The USB hub consists of an upstream and a downstream port. The upstream port is connected to the host while the downstream port provides connections to other peripheral devices.

During its operations the device does not appear as visible on any system mapping. The data that is collected from the upstream port is communicated or transferred with all devices connected to the downstream port. But data that is collected in the downstream ports will only be communicated to the upstream port and the host.

With the creation of USB 3 Hub Argos, a functionality of Point-to-Point routing has been delivered whereby a routing string sent within the packet header allows the host to direct the data to one port destination. With this power consumption, the level of data on the USB network is reduced.

An additional benefit of using a USB Hub is that it provides greater lengths for connectivity. The standard length or a normal USB cable can extend up to 3 meters but with USB hubs it can go up to 5 meters hence providing flexible working conditions.

Types of USB Hubs

USB hubs have only two main types that are powered and unpowered USB hubs.

Powered USB Hubs

From the name we can determine the function of powered USB Hubs. In normal conditions when you connect a device to your computer through USB ports it will drive its power from the computer. But in the case of Powered USB hubs, the computer does not have to provide power to the connected devices because the powered USB hub carries its own power. Powered USB 3 hubs are great in order to connect devices that require high voltages. These devices may include: printers, scanners, large external hard devices.

A single USB port is required to connect both the Powered and unpowered USB hubs. But it cannot transfer high amounts of power that exceeds its limit Afterall it is only one port connection. If many high-voltage devices are connected to your computer simultaneously then the unpowered USB hub will not be able to provide power to all of those connected devices. It is not possible to draw that much power by using a single USB. There is a high chance that some of the connected devices may not function properly because they may not get enough power.

Powered USB 3 hub UK has eliminated this problem. All of the devices that are connected to a powered USB hub port will draw power from the USB connection itself. As a result, all of the pressure to dispense power to multiple devices simultaneously will not be exerted on a single USB port. In conclusion, a crucial and intense hardware powered hub is more favorable.

Some drawbacks of powered USB hubs could be the fact that they are expensive, less portable, and they need to be plugged in.

Unpowered USB Hubs

With all of the benefits that powered USB hubs provide people will often think to avoid unpowered USB Hubs. But that should never be the case. Unpowered USB hubs are perfect for connecting smaller devices that do not need to draw much power and also for connecting one or less devices at a time. Such devices may include: keyboards, mouse, flash devices, gamepads, smartphone chargers etc.

Furthermore, unpowered hubs provide the ease of working with them as they are more portable and don’t need to be plugged into a power outlet. This eliminates the additional power cables. unpowered cables are a much cheaper and affordable option as compared to USB 3 Hub powered.
