How to Layer Up Window Coverings for Temperature Isolation This Winter

With winter already showing signs of arrival in many parts of the world, it’s about time to prepare your home. Winter preparations include insulating for the cold and keeping a cozy profile for your rooms. Such is the case with window coverings and treatments. Layering up on your window coverings with roller window blinds and other options like drapes provide great cold insulation.

Having two different types of coverings on your windows also provide the option for using daylight during the daytime. All that warmth of the sun is always welcome for your rooms during winter. If you can insulate the cold and let in daylight with its warmth, your heating bills will be reduced significantly. Here are a few ideas we found very useful for window covering layering up for winter:

Sheer Panels with Blackout Fabric Curtains

Sheer panels fitted inside your windowpanes with fabric drapes covering them is a nice design choice. This way of doubling up on window coverings allows for versatile color theming in rooms. You can easily mix and match two different color schemes, one with the sheer panels and other with drapes.

Also, the two-layer window covering with this styling will be perfect for cold insulation. You will also be able to move the drapes to their sides and fold away sheer panels during sunny days. Utilizing sunlight with its warmth for the day time and blocking off cold during the night works best.

Layering up on windows like this allows for heating systems to be turned down as well. More heat will enter rooms through windows when needed and more of the cold will be blocked away. Only initial cost concerns are there but they get covered up pretty soon with cut down energy bills.

Two Layers, Two Soft Window Coverings

Not everyone has the taste for hardened window coverings like in door blinds and shutters. Also, soft curtains and coverings are available for everyone’s choices too. Netting the first layer on windows always guarantees privacy at any time. Soft curtains on top of them do the job of blackout drapes.

This can be as simple and also as fancy as you need it to be. The two layers of soft fabrics allow for room customizations of the highest quality as well. Have both layers in softer tones and the room décor element will always be there for homeowners.

Combine Soft Fabric Drapes with Soft Roman Shades

Roman shades and blinds have a very distinctive appeal of their own. These are available in thin fabric layers as well that let in daylight and warmth from the sun while boosting privacy. On top of such Roman shades, you can apply thick soft drapes for blackouts when needed.

Both fabric material layers will offer great insulation as well. Opening them both up, you can take advantage of the sunlight and its warmth too. Have them in similar colors for a signature room finish or mix their colors for versatility. All choices are available for specific design choices.

Go Curtains with Cellular Shades

Another neat little window layering option is to go with cellular shades combined with slide on curtains. Cellular shades have their distinctive appeal when it comes to aesthetics. These work really well for blackout blinds or daylight pass through blinds, whichever you prefer.

Adding a layer of curtains on top of these cellular shades provides that much more insulation and design versatility. You can use any one of the layers for color-matched continuation for aesthetic themes. Also, both these will be available for fully opening and closing on windows letting in daylight and warmth too.

Drapes with Roller Blinds

Roller window blinds are some of the finest when it comes to sleek looks and elegant designs. Not only are these available in any required designs and patterns but their composite materials do great for temperature insulation as well. Also, they can be rolled up or down very easily on windows too.

You can add some quality drapes on top of these roller blinds. This is where rollers are better than something like wooden window blinds. They can be design printed to the required specifications. Different window panes can have their own different roller blinds as well. Functionality with insulation available.

Try a Soft and Hard Window Covering Setup

All this is not to say that soft and hard window coverings cannot work together. On the contrary, you can go with hard window shutters on the back and lay some soft draperies on top. Hard shutters will do the best job of blackout rooms and also insulating the cold when not needed.

The drapes on top can be turned on or off as required. The only thing with this type of window covering option is that full windows will not be visible for daylight maximization. Other than that, this idea looks sleek and very elegant when done right.

Be sure to try out different colors and shades with shutters and curtains. Both will present their own design versatility while offering full functionality as well. Whichever window covering idea you choose, multiple layers will always work best for insulation and window functionality.
