Why IQ testing could be replaced by video games

Introduction

The players aren’t going to be shocked. We and our coworkers have found evidence that video gaming proficiency correlates with IQ. Our group conducted two experiments to prove this. The first featured 56 seasoned gamers engaging in a fast-paced strategic game known as League of Legends, a “multiplayer online battle arena” (MOBA). League of Legends has amassed a global player base in the tens of millions. It’s home to a burgeoning professional esports community, with millions tuning in to watch matches between professional players with advanced skill sets. This business is worth an estimated US$700 million and is developing rapidly.

Our study relied on seasoned players to administer conventional intelligence tests using paper and pencil. As shown by the data, a greater IQ was associated with better game performance. Based on our data, top-tier League of Legends players have an average IQ of 115–120, placing them in the top 15% of the population.

More than 20,000 gamers from two multiplayer online battle arenas (League of Legends and Dota 2) and two “first-person shooters” (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Rainbow Six Siege) were analyzed in our second study (Destiny and Battlefield 3). Fast-paced action games in which the player takes control of a character and views the action from the character’s point of view are known as first-person shooters.

Using data on the players’ performance in-game and their age, we observed that participants’ peaks in IQ and performance in the strategy games League of Legends and Dota 2 occurred simultaneously in their mid-twenties. This is consistent with the behavior of players of other strategy video games like Starcraft II, as well as with those of conventional strategy games like chess, whose peak skill also follows a similar pattern with age.

First-person shooters, which rely more on speed, target precision, and operational decision-making than other genres, showed no such age tendency. Working memory and the capacity to make strategic decisions are more important in MOBAs. A high IQ has been associated with the ability to recognize novel patterns in one’s environment and in one’s opponents.

Experts at strategic games like chess have been found to have above-average IQs in the past. Our study extends this concept to the hundreds of millions of people around the world who regularly engage in gaming. This indicates that success in these games may serve as a reliable, broad, and collapsible indicator of mental capacity. The complex 3D puzzle game Portal 2 has been proposed as an intelligence test through the lens of games. Game-based testing is not only more cost effective than traditional pen-and-paper exams, but it also has the added benefit of reducing test anxiety.

Over the course of several games, this provides access to a vast new pool of behavioral data, which may be used, for instance, as a proxy test for evaluating the IQ of entire populations. Cognitive epidemiology, in which the relationship between intellect and health is tracked over time, could benefit from such a tool.

With the help of such technologies, an early warning system may be put in place in the event of a disaster like the lead contamination of the water supply in Flint, Michigan. To detect any drop in IQ that might be caused by such an incident, we could keep track of a population and compare them to people of a similar background in “control” locations. Also, the research could make use of entirely anonymous data if IQ were being tracked on a population scale by iq test online.

In a multiplayer online game, each action you do results in new data. With so many people playing these games, we can learn about human play behavior on a global scale never before possible. Our findings suggest that actions taken while playing a game may be indicative of those taken during other (non-game) contexts. This offers a tantalizing view into a future in which we may utilize data on gaming behavior to assess the impact of settings, legislation, or medication on the mental health and productivity of entire populations.
