The players aren’t going to be shocked. We and our coworkers have found evidence that video gaming proficiency correlates with IQ. Our group conducted two experiments to prove this. The first featured 56 seasoned gamers engaging in a fast-paced strategic game known as League of Legends, a “multiplayer online battle arena” (MOBA). League of Legends has amassed a global player base in the tens of millions. Our study relied on seasoned players to administer conventional intelligence tests using paper and pencil. As shown by the data, a greater IQ was associated with better game performance. Using data on the players’ performance in-game and their age, we observed that participants’ peaks in IQ and performance in the strategy games League of Legends and Dota 2 occurred simultaneously in their mid-twenties. This is consistent with the behavior of players of other strategy video games like Starcraft II, as well as with those of conventional strategy games like chess, whose peak skill also follows a similar pattern with age.
First-person shooters, which rely more on speed, target precision, and operational decision-making than other genres, showed no such age tendency. Working memory and the capacity to make strategic decisions are more important in MOBAs. A high IQ has been associated with the ability to recognize novel patterns in one’s environment and in one’s opponents.
Experts at strategic games like chess have been found to have above-average IQs in the past. Our study extends this concept to the hundreds of millions of people around the world who regularly engage in gaming. This indicates that success in these games may serve as a reliable, broad, and collapsible indicator of mental capacity. This offers a tantalizing view into a future in which we may utilize data on gaming behavior to assess the impact of settings, legislation, or medication on the mental health and productivity of entire populations.
