One minute, you’re completely happy and content. And the next second, you’re irritated at the littlest thing. And then in the next second, you’re crying and feeling absolutely down.

If this sounds like you, then you might’ve realized: I have constant mood swings.

Are you wondering why this is happening? Then you’re in the right place. here are some common causes of constant mood swings you should know about.

Table of Contents

  • Depression
  • Lack of Sleep
  • Substance Abuse
  • Illness and/or Injury
  • Hormone Imbalance
  • Handle Your Constant Mood Swings by Speaking to a Doctor

Depression

Most people know depression as a mental illness where you become very sad. But you can actually become angry and irritable too.

If you’ve been feeling the above emotions, plus you’ve been exhausted and have difficulty concentrating, then you might be depressed.

Lack of Sleep

Have you ever stayed up all night to finish a paper or study for an exam, then found yourself extremely annoyed at the littlest thing the next day? A lack of sleep can really shorten your fuse.

If you haven’t been sleeping well lately, then this will affect your moods. In fact, if you have severe enough sleep deprivation, you can actually suffer from other psychiatric symptoms, such as hallucinations.

Substance Abuse

While you’re on a high from the substance of your choice, you’ll feel euphoric and like everything’s right in the world. But once that high wears off and you crash, you can become very irritable.

If you don’t get your next fix, you can become even more irritated and even angry. Then, when you finally get your next fix, you’ll feel euphoric again.

For many substances, if you try to get off of them, you’ll experience huge mood swings then as well.

Illness and/or Injury

Having an illness or injury can be very mentally exhausting. While you might be able to usually handle the symptoms, you might often find yourself wishing you were able-bodied.

There are also some chronic diseases that have mood swings as a side effect. They include strokes, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease.

Hormone Imbalance

Hormone imbalance is a main cause of mood swings. While it’s normal for your hormones to fluctuate during your lifetime, a sudden change can definitely affect your moods.

For most women, this might happen because of pregnancy or menopause. But it can also happen if you’ve just started a hormonal birth control method.

If you’re of the latter category, give it some time for your body to adjust. If you’re still having mood swings constantly after a few months, then you might want to consider another method of birth control that’s easier on you.

Handle Your Constant Mood Swings by Speaking to a Doctor

Now you know some common causes of constant mood swings. No matter what the cause of yours is, it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor.

A medical professional can go through your medical history and your current symptoms, then recommend the best course of action to tackle your constant mood swings throughout the daya. As a result, you’ll be able to gain a better quality of life!
