A term insurance plan is designed to provide financial protection for your family in the event of your passing. It provides a high sum assured for an affordable premium, making it the most cost-effective way to ensure security. The only drawback is that if you survive the policy term, you get no payout. For some, this feels like a loss, which is why insurers introduced options like Return of Premium and zero-cost term insurance. Both provide a way to recover premiums, but they work in different ways.

So, which one is better? Let’s understand both options and weigh their advantages.

Return of Premium Option

A Return of Premium (ROP) plan is a type of term insurance where all premiums paid are returned if the life insured survives the policy term. It allows you to enjoy coverage while also ensuring that your money is not entirely lost at the end.

Key Features:

    • Premiums are almost double compared to a regular term plan.

    • Payout happens only at the end of the policy if you survive the term.

    • If death occurs during the term, the nominee receives the full sum assured (not the premiums).

    • Works for those who do not want premiums to feel like a sunk cost.

While this feature sounds appealing, it comes at a significant cost. The higher premium could have otherwise been invested elsewhere for better returns.

Zero Cost Term Insurance

Zero-cost term insurance is a newer option now offered by many insurers. It combines the benefits of a regular term plan with the flexibility of returning premiums. Here, you buy a regular term plan at no extra cost, and after completing a set number of years, you may choose to exit early and receive all premiums back.

Key Features:

    • Premiums are the same as regular term insurance.

    • The option to exit and get premiums back becomes available only after a long duration, often 25–30 years.

    • You must inform the insurer within the eligible time period to claim the return of premiums.

    • If you continue till maturity without using the option, no refund is given.

The biggest advantage here is flexibility. You can keep the plan running or exit if you no longer need coverage. Unlike ROP, you don’t pay extra for this feature.

Comparing the Two

FlexibilityNo flexibility, payout only at maturityHigh flexibility, can decide later to exit

Tax Perspective

Both ROP and zero-cost term insurance qualify for tax benefits. Premiums paid can be claimed as deductions under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, up to ₹1.5 lakh per year. The death benefits remain tax-exempt under Section 10(10D).

Consider a young professional who pays ₹25,000 annually for a regular term plan. With the zero-cost term insurance feature, this premium also reduces taxable income under Section 80C, leading to savings of about ₹5,000 each year. After 30 years, if the individual exits and receives all premiums back, the payout is free from tax (subject to conditions).

Without this option, the person would have paid the same premiums and saved tax but never received the money back. With it, tax relief and premium refund combine to create far greater value.

Which One Should You Choose?

Return of Premium is better if:

    • You want the certainty of receiving your premiums back at the end.

    • You don’t mind paying higher premiums for this assurance.

Zero Cost Term Insurance is better if:

    • You want the lowest possible cost while enjoying flexibility later.

    • You are comfortable with the idea that premiums are refunded only if you exit within the eligible timelines.

    • You prefer the option to adapt your plan as your financial responsibilities change.

For most young professionals, zero-cost term insurance is the smarter choice. It offers the protection of term insurance without higher premiums, and the flexibility to get premiums back if your financial situation changes decades down the line.

Final Word

Both options attempt to solve the same concern: what happens to your premiums if you survive the policy term. A Return of Premium plan guarantees a payout, but at a much higher cost. Zero-cost term insurance, on the other hand, keeps your premiums low and gives you the flexibility to exit later and still recover what you paid.

For those who want affordability, adaptability, and efficiency, zero-cost plans are usually more appealing. But the final choice depends on your comfort with long-term commitments and financial goals.

When you’re ready to explore these options, Aviva India offers thoughtfully designed term insurance solutions, including flexible features like zero-cost options, so you can protect your family while optimising your money.
