Did you know that drunk driving results in over 44 billion dollars worth of deaths and damages every year?

DUIs are a big deal, but as long as you don’t cause an accident or damage, your first DUI is not the end of the world. Do you know what to do after a DUI?

We’re here to offer advice. Keep reading to learn all about how to handle the legal system after you’ve made that serious mistake.

  • That’s What to Do After a DUI

1. Arrange Transportation

This step is going to be important throughout the DUI process, but it starts from the day that you’re arrested.

Sometimes you’ll be able to leave jail as soon as someone posts bail for you. You won’t have your car, though, so you need to have someone drive you home. It’s also possible that you’ll need to wait until the next day to leave.

Even after you’re home, you’ll need to figure out how you’re going to get to your court date, any classes that you’ll need to take post-trial, and all of your responsibilities.

Arranging transportation as early as possible will make your life easier.

2. Remember Your Court Date

You will receive a court date. You will likely not have a say in this date unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Make sure that you note the date down on your phone and laptop so you have visual reminders. It’s also helpful to inform other people in the household so they can remind you as well.

Tell your school or workplace about your court date so you can get time off. Arrange for any necessary childcare.

3. Do You Need a Lawyer? (Spoiler: Yes)

Consider whether or not you want to invest in a lawyer for your DUI case. While most cases are cut and dry, it’s still helpful to have someone on your side to help you navigate the complicated legal process.

If you truly believe that you’re innocent, you need a lawyer. Even if you don’t, a lawyer will prepare you for your court date and advocate for you to make the process go more smoothly.

4. Prepare for Court

Soon, you’ll have to appear in court. Are you ready?

Your lawyer will help you with all necessary paperwork and preparations. They may guide you on what to say and how to dress to get the best possible results.

Keep in mind that if you are guilty, you aren’t likely to get out of the DUI. You may, however, have a less severe punishment.

That’s What to Do After a DUI

Getting a DUI isn’t the end of the world. Knowing what to do after a DUI will prepare you for that potential occurrence.

At the end of the day, it’s best to not get a DUI at all. Driving under the influence has severe consequences. Not only will you face legal charges, but you can also cause serious injuries (or worse).

In the event that you do get a DUI, contact a good lawyer immediately.
