What is Personal Auto Insurance?

Auto insurance is a type of insurance purchased by drivers, typically to protect against financial losses and injuries sustained in an auto accident. This type of insurance typically covers bodily injury, property damage liability, and medical payments incurred following car accidents that may have caused death or harm.

Miller Hanover Insurance is an excellent example of a full-service insurance agency that provides drivers with auto insurance policies in Central PA. You can learn more about Miller Hanover Insurance from their website.

Types of Personal Auto Insurance

There are many different types of personal auto insurance, including:

– PIP (Personal Injury Protection)

– Medical Payments Insurance (MPI)

– Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UMC).

– Uninsured Motorists Property Damage (UMPD)

– Emergency Roadside Service

– Comprehensive Insurance – Collision Insurance.

PIP (Personal Injury Protection)

Personal injury protection (PIP) is no-fault insurance coverage for automobile accident victims in some jurisdictions. It pays for the medical and related expenses of the driver, passengers, and pedestrians injured in a car accident regardless of who was at fault. Some states require coverage, and some do not. In states that require PIP, it is usually provided by a state fund, although some private companies offer it as well. The minimum amount of PIP coverage is typically set by each state’s no-fault law. In addition, the coverage may be subject to deductibles, maximum benefit amounts, and other limitations under the state’s laws in which it is purchased.

Medical Payments Insurance (MPI)

Medical payments insurance is insurance that reimburses an injured party for medical expenses incurred after an automobile accident. MPI is typically purchased by the other vehicle’s driver (the at-fault vehicle). This form of auto insurance does not cover out-of-pocket expenses for the injured driver, but it may cover other family members who are injured and use health services as well as lost wages and pain and suffering. MPI is not subject to deductibles, installment billing, or maximum benefit amounts. In addition, it does not affect the deductible amount the at-fault driver must pay under their personal auto insurance policy.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UMC)

Uninsured motorist coverage (UMC) reimburses an injured party for medical expenses incurred during an automobile accident regardless of who was at fault. Mostly, the at-fault driver purchases UMC. This form of auto insurance does not cover out-of-pocket expenses for the injured driver, but it does cover other injured family members, lost wages, pain, and suffering. UMC is subject to deductibles, installment billing, or maximum benefit amounts and does not affect the deductible amount the at-fault driver must pay under his or her personal auto insurance policy.

Uninsured Motorists Property Damage (UMPD)

Uninsured motorist property damage coverage (UMPD) reimburses an injured party for damage to his or her vehicle regardless of who was at fault. The at-fault driver, in most cases, purchases UMPD. This form of auto insurance does not cover out-of-pocket expenses for the injured driver, but it does cover the value of his or her vehicle and money lost in the vehicle due to damage. UMPD is subject to deductibles, installment billing, or maximum benefit amounts and does not affect the deductible amount the at-fault driver must pay under his or her personal auto insurance policy.

Emergency Roadside Service

Emergency roadside service is a form of protection for those who have experienced car accident injuries. This type of personal auto insurance coverage pays for the emergency medical expenses associated with an automobile accident regardless of who is at fault. Emergency roadside service does not cover out-of-pocket expenses for the injured driver or his or her family, only reimbursement of emergency medical expenses. Emergency roadside service can be purchased under a medical payment policy or a comprehensive policy.

Comprehensive Insurance – Collision Insurance

Collision insurance is a type of auto insurance that covers costs incurred by a driver if he or she collides with another car, building, or other objects. Collision coverage does not cover costs incurred if the vehicle is damaged due to vandalism, theft, fire, flood, or natural disasters such as snowstorms. However, vehicle damage from potholes and other road hazards can be covered with extended comprehensive coverage.
