What is Microneedling?

If you need to revive your skin through non-surgical means, microneedling Sparks may be an option for you. Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that pricks your skin with tiny, sharp, sterilized needles. The micro-injuries on your skin’s surface trigger the body’s natural healing response, causing it to produce more collagen and elastin, which gives you a younger appearance.

Specialists use microneedling to address skin issues such as dark spots, acne, large spots, reduced skin elasticity, sun damage, scars, and hair loss. Microneedling is primarily a facial procedure, but it can be done on other body parts, including your stomach and thighs. Here is what to expect during a microneedling session.

What happens during a microneedling procedure?

The procedure can take place in your dermatologist’s office and usually lasts for ten to 20 minutes, depending on the surface areas of the skin to be treated. Some people opt to buy microneedling devices and perform the procedure at home, but specialists advise against this. Although microneedling at home can help you save some coins, you may not get the desired outcomes since the needles of home devices are not as sharp as the ones your dermatologist uses. For this reason, the pricks will be shallow, and the results may not be noticeable.

There is also a risk of hurting your skin and spreading germs to the micro-injuries, causing an infection. Therefore, you should work with a skilled and certified dermatologist to avoid undesirable side effects. For a professional microneedling, your dermatologist will smooth numbing cream on your skin so that you are comfortable during treatment.

Your specialist then rolls a pen-shaped hand-held device evenly across your skin, causing tiny pricks. Depending on the depth of the cuts, you may or may not bleed during the procedure. Once your dermatologist covers the entire area, they will apply soothing cream or serum on your skin.

Some people have an allergic reaction to the serum, but this is unlikely. Your specialist may advise keeping the treated skin clean to avoid infections. You may need to avoid vigorous activity that triggers sweating and places like swimming pools and oceans with many germs.

Things to consider before microneedling

It is essential to know that microneedling is not a quick fix for your skin issues. Your body’s healing process does not occur overnight, so you will need several treatments before seeing the final results. Although the procedure is generally safe, it still poses several risks making it essential to have an initial consultation with your specialist.

Expect the treated skin to feel tender and appear a bit red immediately after the procedure. Fortunately, these side effects tend to fade away after a few days. Healing may take several days to weeks, depending on the depth of the prick. Your skin may flake or peel during the healing period and feel tight.

People who have a history of keloids may develop scars on the treated areas, worsening the condition. The tiny holes created during the procedure could also let in germs, causing an infection. For this reason, dermatologists sterilize the tool and clean your skin before the process.
