What is Degenerative Disc Disease?

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a condition that occurs when the discs in your spine break down over time. The discs are located between the vertebrae, or bones, in your spine. They act as shock absorbers and help to keep your spine flexible. As you age, the discs can start to dry out and lose their cushioning. This can lead to pain, stiffness, and other problems.

DDD is a very common condition. It is estimated that by age 60, about 80% of people will have some degree of DDD. The condition is more common in people who have had a previous injury to their spine, who are overweight or obese, or who have a family history of DDD.

Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease

The symptoms of DDD can vary from person to person. Some people may have no symptoms at all, while others may experience severe pain. Common symptoms of DDD include:

  1. Back pain
  2. Neck pain
  3. Pain in the arms or legs
  4. Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs
  5. Muscle weakness
  6. Stiffness
  7. Difficulty moving the spine

Causes of Degenerative Disc Disease

The exact cause of DDD is not fully understood. However, it is thought to be caused by a combination of factors, including:

  1. Aging
  2. Injury to the spine
  3. Overweight or obesity
  4. Smoking
  5. Heavy lifting
  6. Occupations that require repetitive bending, lifting, or twisting

Diagnosis of Degenerative Disc Disease

There is no single test that can diagnose DDD. Your doctor will likely take a medical history, perform a physical exam, and order imaging tests, such as X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans. These tests can help to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions.

Treatment for Degenerative Disc Disease

There is no cure for DDD. However, there are a number of treatments that can help to relieve pain and improve function. Treatment options include:

  1. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  2. Pain relievers
  3. Muscle relaxants
  4. Physical therapy
  5. Acupuncture
  6. Epidural injections
  7. Surgery

The best treatment for you will depend on the severity of your symptoms and your overall health. Talk to your doctor about the best treatment options for you.

Prevention of Degenerative Disc Disease

There is no sure way to prevent Degenerative Disc Disease. However, there are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk, including:

  1. Maintaining a healthy weight
  2. Exercising regularly
  3. Avoiding smoking
  4. Lifting and moving objects with proper technique
  5. Avoiding activities that put stress on your spine

If you have any concerns about DDD, talk to your doctor. They can help you to develop a plan to manage your symptoms and prevent further damage to your spine. If you need more information to vist spineinfo
