What is a Y strainer valve

When debris, such as rust or scale, and other materials mix with fluids or gases, and other media is then allowed to flow through a pipeline, it can cause damage to the line’s valve seats, and as a result a shortened valve life, not to mention malfunctioning and damaged equipment. Therefore, the use of correctly selected strainers at correct locations is essential to protect expensive and critical downstream equipment such as control valves, flow meters, steam traps, pumps, etc. In this article, We have hoarded fundamental information on the strainer valve provided by China Y-Strainer manufacturer. Continue reading to find out more about strainers and their installation within a system.

What is a strainer valve?

Strainer valves can are known to be pipe fitting where the hypothetical liquid has passes through to purify itself, filtering or separating it from solid matter. Anything used to strain a liquid or any devices functioning as a sieve or filter used to stop the hypothetical solid matter from mixing with our hypothetical liquid. Strainers prevent pipeline debris such as jointing compound, weld metal, scale and rust in pipelines, protecting equipment and chemical processes from their harmful effects, and so reducing downtime and maintenance.

Different Types of Strainer Valves

Strainers can be divided into two main categories according to their body configuration:

-Y Type

-T-Type/Basket Type

Y Type Strainer

A Y Type Strainer valve gets its name from its setup and is usually used in pressurised liquids, gases or liquids. They can also be utilised during suction and vacuum conditions. Y Strainers were built for applications where small amounts of solid particulate are expected and where maintenance is supposed to be infrequent. If solid matter is flushed easily from the screen, and fluids can be exhausted to the atmosphere, a blow-down valve on the draining port will allow cleaning without removal of the screen and without disturbing the process flow.

A Y Type Strainer has the advantage of being installed in either a horizontal or vertical position. In both cases, the screening element must be on the underside of the strainer body so that the entrapped material can be properly collected.

In horizontal steam or gas piping, Y types should be installed in such a manner so that the pocket is on the horizontal plane. This prevents water from collecting in the pocket which can cause erosion and affect heat transfer processes.
