Your mouth is an incredibly sensitive area, so when you have an inflamed gum, it can be painful and worrisome. It’s important to recognize the symptom of inflamed gums and treat them as soon as possible.

While many causes of inflamed gums are not serious, they can be a symptom of a bigger problem. If you experience the occasional inflamed gum, then learn the most common causes and treatments for the condition.

We created this article with a Cosmetic Dentist in williamsburg so you can make the best decision for your situation and if a dentist visit is required. We created this article so you can make the best decision for your situation and if a dentist visit is required. You’ll be better in no time if you check out these tips.

Inflamed Gum Causes

The primary cause of inflamed gums is periodontal disease. If your teeth aren’t properly cared for, then bacteria creates plaque on your teeth and gums. In fact, more than 75 percent of people over 35 years old get some form of periodontal disease.

Gingivitis is the most common form of gum disease and includes inflamed gums. Inflammation caused by gingivitis isn’t painful. When it is caused by more serious gum disease, it can not only be painful but be a precursor to cavities and tooth loss.

Injury from eating hard or sharp food such as potato chips also causes inflammation. Canker sores also cause gum pain and inflammation. If the inflammation worsens, then it can lead to bleeding gums.

Hormones can cause more blood flow to the gums, which leads to inflammation. Painful, swollen, and bleeding gums are a side effect of chemotherapy as well.

Preventing Swollen Gums

The key to preventing swollen gums is to take good care of your teeth and gums. Everyone should brush twice a day using proper brushing techniques. Have a diet of good foods high in vitamin C and calcium. Don’t eat too much sugar.

Bacteria feed on sugar and it causes them to multiply rapidly leading to cavities and other issues. Drink lots of water to wash your teeth. This keeps bacteria from attaching to your teeth and causing cavities and gum inflammation.

Use mouthwash every day because it kills plaque-causing bacteria and reduces the chance of gum swelling.

The stress hormone cortisol can cause inflamed gums, so reduce stress and keep inflammation from happening in your gums and throughout your body.

Consequences of Swollen Gums

The most common issue with swollen gums is they are unsightly. People are insecure about their smile because they’re afraid people will see the red inflamed gums. If the gums are bleeding, then it’s even more of a vanity issue.

Swollen gums often are the first step towards more serious gum disease. If gone untreated, then it can lead to loose teeth, shifting teeth, and eventually tooth loss. Treatment of gum disease is one of many services this dentist offers.

Be Wary of Swollen Gums

If you have an inflamed gum, then consider visiting your dentist to see if you have the beginning of gum disease. Many times, inflamed gums are temporary and nothing to worry about.
