How Does a DMR Work?
For most intents and purposes, they work the same way that AM and FM do.

First Differences
Since digital radios are based on the same principles as analog radios, the first thing you should know is that there are some differences between them. For one thing, digital radios offer clearer transmission than analog ones do.
There are several technical differences between Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) and FM (Frequency Modulation).
DMR uses a special method of modulation called Adaptive Differential Pulse-code Modulation (ADPCM). This is the same type of modulation used in digital cell phones. With ADPCM, the audio signal is converted to digital pulses, using “1’s” and “0’s”. DMR then compresses the data into 4 separate data streams.
The signal is then sent out via the 4 separate data streams on the same RF channel.
This is called Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM), which means that the 4 data streams are divided evenly over time.
FM uses a special method of modulation called Amplitude Modulation (AM). In AM, the amplitude of the carrier wave is varied to represent the amplitude of the audio signal. First, a low-frequency “carrier” signal that stays at a constant frequency is generated. Then, using techniques called “sidebands”, this carrier wave is combined with a high frequency to represent the audio frequencies. In FM, this second high-frequency signal is called the “modulating signal” and it changes several times per second. This causes the frequency of the carrier wave to fluctuate also. This allows for a wider bandwidth to be used, allowing for more audio information to be transmitted in a single channel.
