Most remodeling projects are initiated due to several reasons. Some of these include; the need for more space, the house is outdated, or simply because the current layout of the house no longer meets the owners’ needs. In some cases such as when a house is about to get listed on the market, remodeling may be done to give the house a new look. This could help increase the value of the house.

When done right, home remodeling will not only increase the value of the house, it would also enhance its functionality tremendously.

Steps Involved In Remodeling a House

Planning

Just like with any project one embarks on, remodeling a house requires thorough planning.  You shouldn’t start a home remodeling project without a solid action plan. If you do, it would likely end terribly. This is mainly because home remodeling involves a lot of decision-making. Each of these decisions needs to be well thought out, explored, and discussed for the project to be successful.

While planning a remodeling project, here are some factors you need to consider:

  • Budget: This is one of the foremost factors to take into consideration when planning a remodeling project. It involves ensuring one has the financial capability to see the project to completion no matter the size or the scope of work to be done.
  • Design & Style: this planning stage involves you taking the time to research and select a style that suits you and your family’s needs. This style must also be functional and durable. You should try as much as possible to avoid a trendy style that might need to be updated in a few years or a style that makes modification impossible after completion.

Once a style has been selected, you have no choice but to stick with it. This is because your choice of style and design will influence the type of materials you will buy.

  • Size: You also need to measure and map out the size and area the project will cover. Is it going to cover just a room? Will it involve the kitchen and dining room or is it going to be the whole house? These decisions need to be made at the planning stage.
  • Contractor: The type of contractor you will be hiring will determine how fast the project will be completed and how well the remodeling will be carried out. Meanwhile, here are some factors to consider when choosing a contractor for your project.

    • They must be licensed and insured to do the work.
    • They must have enough experience.
    • Be ready to acquire all the necessary permits for yourself.

Demolition

To build new structures and implement improved styles, the old must be removed. This can mean different things to various homeowners. Demolition covers the removal of materials in the house such as carpets or wallpapers, moving out old furniture, tearing walls down, or bringing the roof down. It may go as far as tearing down every part of the house leaving out just the exterior walls and key structural elements of the house.

Rebuilding

After demolition has been completed, the next step is to begin rebuilding your house to suit your new modeling design. This is the stage where the actual work of remodeling is carried out. It is where the new designs and layout will be implemented.

Listed below are some of the key things done at this stage.

  • Work behind walls: this includes; electrical works, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning rough-ins, subfloors, and insulations.
  • Walls: this includes the patching of walls, dealing with framing and drywall (hanging, applying compound & drying it, and finally sanding it for smoothness).
  • Flooring & painting: some contracts prefer painting before flooring. Whichever comes first, the goal of this step involves getting the dried wall painted and the floors done.
  • Cabinets, fixtures, doors & windows: this step involves getting your new cabinetry, lighting, bathtubs, showers, toilets, sinks installed. After all required installation has been done, you can then move in your appliances such as dishwasher, refrigerator, and stoves.

Final Touches

This stage is where all personal touch-ups can be made. Things like backsplashes, wallpapers, and more can be installed after the process of rebuilding is done. Find more remodeling tips at Hardie Boys blog.
