The great recycling initiative is alive and well, and many people sell their scrap metal to a local scrap metal dealer to make a little extra money. Know more about scrap copper and the few different grades that your local scrap metal dealer would offer.

There are 4 different grades of scrap copper, which are as follows:

  1. Bare Copper Wire – This is bright copper wiring that has no plastic outer sleeve and if you have a lot of bare copper wire that you would like to sell as scrap, don’t hesitate to approach your local scrap metal dealer. To qualify as bright cable wiring, the copper must be free from plastics and not in a burned condition; in other words, pure copper wiring minus the outer sleeve.
  2. Number 1 Copper – This is copper wire not smaller than gauge 16, or copper tubing that is not affected by other materials. Burnt wire should be free of residue and with a Google search, you can quickly find a local scrap metal dealer who could offer the best copper scrap price per KG in Sydney or in your location.
  3. Number 2 Copper – Copper 2 is copper that is alloyed with another metal and this should also be free from other debris or residue. Cooper tubing with welds is categorised as copper 2 class and when you contact the scrap metal dealer, they would pay for a visit and examine the copper, then offer you a price for taking the copper away and recycling it.
  4. Light Copper – This is copper that is 88-92% pure and consists of copper sheeting, old copper kettles, pots and pans. Light copper should be clean and free from other materials. If you are not sure what grade copper you have, search online for local scrap copper recyclers in Sydney or in the area where you are located to send images of the scrap copper to. They will offer you a price based on the type and the weight of the copper.

Many tradespeople like electricians and plumbers have a working arrangement with a scrap metal dealer, who would periodically visit them to buy the wiring and piping they accumulate during the course of their work. You would be surprised at how much copper the freelance plumber or electrician manages to accumulate and by joining forces with a local scrap metal dealer, they receive top rates for their scrap copper.

Copper Scrap

Scrap copper is sold by the kg, much like all other metals. You will find that an online scrap metal dealer offers the best scrap copper prices. Using Google makes it easy to find all the scrap metal dealers in your area and it is easy to find the best deal. Store up your scrap metal until you have enough to call up your local scrap metal dealer and they would offer you top rates. When you use the services of an established scrap metal dealer, you can be sure that the copper will be responsibly recycled.
