What Are the Different General Contractor Responsibilities

There are over 36,000 general contractors in the United States. So, there’s no doubt that this job has become very popular among those in construction. But, being a general contractor means having crucial and weighty obligations.

While contractor responsibilities vary, they center around managing a construction project. Contractors make sure workers stay safe and the project goes well.

Would you like to learn more about this job? If so, keep reading as we look further into the contractor job description and learn about their duties.

Managing Day-To-Day Activities

Leadership is one of the most important contractor skills since it plays a vital role in a construction project.

General contractors are in charge of managing the daily tasks of a project from start to finish. That means they handle small duties, such as providing tools for the workers, and larger ones, such as breaking ground on the project. Moreover, a GC will have to ensure that the project always has enough materials and order more if needed.

A GC must also communicate with the construction manager to let the owner know how the project is going.

The contractor licensing process involves learning the responsibilities of a construction manager. So sometimes a contractor will also serve as a project manager.

Hiring Specialty Tradesmen

Another important responsibility of a general contractor is hiring tradesmen like plumbers or electricians. First, they ensure that workers have the necessary licenses to work on the project. But general contractors also ensure that tradesmen have the materials they need to carry out the job.

Of course, they need to make sure they meet necessary contractor legal requirements before hiring anyone. As you can imagine, failing to meet the requirements can jeopardize the project and the contractor’s license.

Get Their Hands Dirty When Needed

Even though most GCs manage a project, some take part in the project. That means that general contractors need to be a jack of all trades so they can fulfill any role.

Of course, if they manage a residential project, they need to bring their own tools. And, they’ll need to buy the material required to complete the project. Thus, it’s important that they know all about tools and invest in their own, such as the best cordless tools for contractors that make completing a project easier.

Contractor Responsibilities Made Simple

Without a doubt, contractor responsibilities are important at all stages of a project. Thus, it’s a great job to take on in the construction industry.
