Top 3 Most Common Reasons for Calling a Locksmith

Historians believe locksmithing began around 4000 years ago in Babylon and Ancient Egypt. This makes it one of the world’s oldest professions. While locks have changed over time, locksmiths still offer much-needed services.

While you may not need one on a day-to-day basis, there may be certain situations where you wonder “do I need a locksmith?” Let’s take a look at three of the most common reasons for calling a locksmith.

Lost, Stolen, or Broken Keys

If your keys are lost, stolen, or broken you’ll want to consider calling a locksmith. If your keys are lost, there’s a chance you could not be able to get back into your home that day. Hopefully, in this case, you have a backup set.

However, even if you do, you should still consider hiring a locksmith. This is because a copy of your key is floating around in public and could pose a security hazard. In the same way, stolen keys should also prompt calling a locksmith.

If you’ve been a victim of theft, there is a higher chance that your home could not be burgled. You should have a locksmith replace your locks immediately.

Over time, keys wear down and may start to weaken. When this happens there is a risk that your key could break or snap off inside the lock. If this happens, you should not attempt to extract the broken key yourself, as it could cause more damage to the lock.

Instead, call a locksmith to have them extract the broken part and replace your key. Even better, have a locksmith replace your key if it starts wearing down before it actually breaks.

Moving Homes

Moving homes is an often overlooked time when to call a locksmith. However, you should change all of the locks in your new home as soon as possible. The previous homeowners may have given extra keys to friends, family members, and neighbors in case of emergency.

While this is a common practice, it means many strangers may have access to your home even if your doors are locked. In order to be safe, you should hire a locksmith services company to replace your locks.

You’re Locked Out

Getting locked out of your home or car is one of the most common reasons to call a locksmith. If no one else can help you get back into your property, a locksmith may be your only option.

You should not try to break into your own property. This could cause injury to you and possibly damage to your property that is not covered by insurance.

An emergency locksmith is a quick solution, which may be important if you’re stuck in the rain or cold. However, it can also save you money.

Get Help by Calling a Locksmith

If you have lost, broken, or stolen keys, are locked out of your property, or have recently moved, the answer to “should I call a locksmith” is yes. Calling a locksmith can help you quickly solve these and many other problems.
