Tips to Store Batteries

It is with no doubt; batteries are one of the most useful products. Although they are used everywhere from flashlights to remote control cars, we only tend to think about them only when they need to be replaced.

If you are having batteries that you are not using as of now, you need to make sure that they are stored in good condition. To store your batteries safely, you should always keep them in their original packing, and never store them inside the equipment. Here are a few guidelines that should help you keep the batteries in good condition for as long as possible.

• Remove batteries from the equipment

When the equipment is not in use, you should remove the batteries from that equipment. This way your batteries will stand a better chance of lasting longer, if you take them out of the devices or their charger, install them separately. Apart from that, you will also end up preventing any damage to your devices in the event such as batteries leak or corrode.

• Always keep the temperature down

To keep your battery’s life long-lasting, make sure to avoid any extreme heat. If you are putting the batteries in a storage unit, opt for a climate control facility. Many people think that the best place to store batteries is inside a refrigerator; however that is not the case at all. This is because the condensation from the refrigerator can damage batteries. Apart from this, the prolonged exposure to extreme cold can also reduce battery life.

• Make sure that the batteries are contained

You should always make sure that the batteries do not come in contact with metal objects; this will help you avoid leaking or rupturing off batteries. If possible, keep them in a battery storage box. They are available in a wide variety of sizes. Make sure to choose the container which is vapour proof, this way you can keep the moisture away from damaging your batteries.

• Tie up loose batteries

In case you do not have the original packaging to store your batteries, it is best to bunch them together with the rubber band and place them in a plastic bag. However, do not ignore the positive and negative sides at each end of the battery. When you are bunching the batteries together, always make sure that the positive ends are going in the same direction.

• Separate old batteries from the new batteries

You can end up with battery leakage or device damage if you mix old and new batteries in a device. You can avoid this by storing old and new batteries separately. You should also try to know which batteries have a full charge and which don’t. This will prevent you from accidentally losing power. You can buy a battery tester to help you with this.

• Always keep in mind the rules for rechargeable batteries

There are two types of batteries, those you use once, and then throw away, and those you can recharge after use. Always make sure to store rechargeable batteries at a 40 percent charge, this will allow the battery to gradually discharge.
