Electricity has made our lifestyles so easy to live. We use electricity for several reasons; to power our home appliances, keep us warm and brighten our houses, and many other purposes. That’s why you need to reach out to H&A Long Island Electrician | Circuit Repair if you need electrical services. Use of electricity poses its pros and cons; many home injuries are due to electricity-related issues, but if guidelines are followed, such damages will not happen to your loved ones.

Here are tips to consider when using electricity to keep your family from the dangers posed by the careless use of power.

Table of Contents

  • Place Electricity appliances away from water.
  • Repair/Replace Damaged Power Cords
  • Regularly check all electricity Outlets.
  • Use Tamper-resistant outlets
  • Ensure your lights do not flicker
  • Always read warning signs.
  • Always wear shoes while using electrical appliances.
  • Ensure your hands are always dry
  • Always hire a qualified electrician.

Place Electricity appliances away from water.

At no point should you neglect water spills on any of your home appliances, otherwise you might be igniting an explosion. Water on an electrical cord or a home machine can start a fire. To ensure your family’s safety at home, ensure all your home machines are well connected, and no spills of water are left all over.

Repair/Replace Damaged Power Cords

The moment you notice one of your power cord cables’ wire is bare, tape it and plan to replace it. Negligence of bare wires is a life-threatening exposure to you and your loved ones. Keep your family safe by regularly checking your power cords to see if there is any protective coating wearing off.

Regularly check all electricity Outlets.

While at it, ensure you never surpass the highest power consumption allowed when using certain home appliances. Most homeowners have reported home injuries that were caused due to overloading of power outlets. To ensure your family’s safety, check on your appliances’ power consumption, and see whether your power cord supports it; alternatively, inquire from a qualified electrician to guarantee your security.

Use Tamper-resistant outlets

At home, it is usually challenging to control your children because sometimes you are busy with work and cannot be everywhere at the same time. If you invest in TR receptacles, you’ll be taking the first step in ensuring your children’s safety. In case you have children who love to play with sockets and everything in the house, buying a Tamper-resistant receptacle will protect them from electrocution. Remember not to place a 3-prong plug into a 2-receptacle opening.

Ensure your lights do not flicker

If you notice when you switch on your home lights and keep on flickering, then there is a problem that needs to be fixed. It can be a broken wire or one that has worn out, and you promptly need to hire a professional electrician to find out the cause and fix the problem. Your electrician will ensure all your wires are well-grounded, and at no point, the electric connector is in contact with metal.

Always read warning signs.

As much as we are busy day in and day out, ensure once you are home, you can take a brief stroll and see if everything is in place. If you smell an appliance burning or some smoke in the air, touch an outlet and feel it’s warm, worn out and bare outlets lying on the ground

Call for a qualified electrician near your residence to fix the issues before it’s too late. At all times, ensure you have complete cords, fitting plugs, and, most importantly, all the safety measures are put in place.

Always wear shoes while using electrical appliances.

Never underestimate the importance of wearing shoes when handling electrical machines. Whether you are using a mower or blending some smoothie, wear shoes to stay safe. Ensure when you are using any power tools, you got the right gear on at all times. From gloves to eye plugs and everything in between.

Ensure your hands are always dry

When using any power machines, ensure your hands are dry at all times. Whether you are in a hurry from the shower and want to dry your hair, ensure that your hands are air-dry before you touch that dryer, heater, kettle, toaster, or any electrical appliance. Otherwise, you’ll be posing a severe danger to yourself and your loved ones.

Always hire a qualified electrician.

Unless you are the professional electrician, ensure when replacing, repairing, or fixing electrical appliances, you work with a qualified electrician. You may have tried repairing your washing machine one time, and it worked, and that doesn’t qualify you as an experienced electrician. To avoid imposing danger to you and your loved ones, hire an expert to repair any power tools. As much as we enjoy the benefits of electricity, we should also ensure safety measures are followed for safety purposes.
