Tips to create the perfect telecommuting corner during the pandemic

Like many people, you found yourself working from home overnight. You now face the many distractions (children, cleaning, washing dishes, TV) and obstacles that teleworking brings.

You didn’t have time to shop for a desk, an ergonomic chair and the necessary storage. What was supposed to be a week or two now extends into 5-6 months at home and it is essential to create space for daily work or even home schooling.

The luminosity

Light is an important factor to consider when setting up your worktable. It plays an important role in motivation and allows you to keep your morale up (especially in these difficult times). Studies have also shown that working near a window during the day helps you sleep better at night and encourages physical activity. Place your desk in front of a window or in a room that is bright during working hours.

Calm

Obviously, who says work, says need for peace. This is not always easy with the children at home, the spouse in the living room, the dog who demands attention. Still, try to find a room in the house that allows you to concentrate and make important calls, ideally with a door that can be closed. According to the studies, 3d structure give us more calm, you can also try to change the wall into 3d paint (papel de parede 3d)

Tidying up

Telecommuting may be temporary in your case, but it’s important to find a space to store the documents you need for your job, away from the potential mess. You wouldn’t want an important contract to serve as a canvas for your child. If you don’t already have a filing cabinet or library at home, use storage bins that will keep your paperwork safe.

The location

The first instinct is to sit on the kitchen table. The table is large, there is room for the computer and paperwork. However, when it comes time to eat, it will be more difficult to drop out if your workplace is where you normally eat. Not to mention that every evening for family meals, you will have to move your entire “office” and set it up again the next day. This is not ideal unless you do not use the dining room regularly.

Personalization

Search the house for a few accessories that could enhance your workstation. An accent lamp, a plant, a family photo, or a painting to hang on the wall. Make the space friendly to make it a place where you want to “go” in the morning, even if you still have your slippers on.

The ideal is to have a fixed workspace dedicated to your professional activities, even if you are teleworking (temporarily or for a long time). This will make it easy to ‘leave the office’ at the end of the day and create a zone of calm necessary to get work done, make calls and conferencing.

The same applies when it comes to giving short lessons to your children. Also be careful not to neglect the ergonomics of your workstation as much as possible. Make sure your arms are at the right height, your computer monitor at eye level, and your chair has good back support (as much as possible, of course!). Send us pictures of your installations as a comment!
