1. Unplug it before cleaning

Humidifiers operate using electricity! And a big hazard can occur when electricity and cleaning supply mix. So before you even get started cleaning the humidifier, double-check it is actually unplugged. It is better safe than sorry, no matter how simple or silly this tip may seem.

1. Mix water with bleach

You’ll need to create a balanced solution of water and bleach first before you get cleaning. Once you’ve mixed both ingredients together, pour it into your emptied water tank and let it sit there for at least 20 minutes. That way, the solution has plenty of time to get to work and eliminate any potential threats that may be festering inside.

1. Rinse, rinse, rinse

Because the solution you use is bleach-based, you want to be extra thorough and ensure there is no bleach left in the humidifier before using again—otherwise, you may be breathing the bleach in the next time the humidifier is on! So after a very good rinse, wipe the humidifier down and do a sniff test to ensure that you can no longer smell the bleach on the parts of the humidifier. If you can still smell some, rinse again!

1. Replace your filter

While turning your filter over after each use will help it last longer, all good things eventually come to an end. We recommend getting a new filter for your humidifier every two months to be sure that the filter is functioning properly! But if before the two months are up the humidifier starts smelling funky, it may also be time to get that new replacement filter. Humidifiers should smell pleasant, not stinky!

As we mentioned before, cleaning your humidifier should not be a casual occurrence. Bacteria grow fast, so you always have to act fast. It is better to take the time upfront and clean the humidifier after every single use than wait until it is too late and need to get a new one altogether. So be consistent with emptying the leftover water in the humidifier’s tank and give it a good rinse. You’ll be surprised how efficiently you can do it after a few goes!
