Joy Maxwell, M.Ed, founder of both The Joy of Childcare and Joy Maxwell & Co., is an inspiration childcare consultant with over 20 years of experience. She began her education journey as a student, herself, with an undying passion for child services and love for children.
The Joy Maxwell & Co. offers assistance to entrepreneurs, business owners and creative strategists, all seeking to find financial success with their respective companies. Maxwell utilizes a laundry list of services, including motivational speaking, career coaching and consulting, all in an effort to provide tactical advice and strategies to reach financial goals.
In addition to helping people scale their childcare businesses, she also helps aspiring childcare center enthusiasts and budding entrepreneurs launch their own respective businesses as well, by way of The Joy of Childcare.
“I’m here to tell you that by changing your mindset, you can change your destiny,” she said. “Together, we can make your visions and dreams a reality!”
Maxwell started volunteering in Philadelphia at a HeadStart program and sought to pursue childcare as a full-time profession, but after graduating, her advisor convinced her that, because of her high intelligence, she should opt for higher pay in the education field. She ultimately ended up teaching for eight years, which led to feelings of depression, stress and weight gain.
In her final year as a teacher, she was making roughly $40,000 in annual salary. After opening a childcare center in the basement of her home, her best month turned in over $50,000.
Maxwell has quite the portfolio, having earned master’s degrees in both multicultural education and child psychology, while she is also currently working to obtain a Ph.D. in organizational leadership as well.
Her tutelage includes coaching for childcare professionals, over a curriculum which includes securing business funding, how to teach, monitor and observe classrooms and childcare health and safety protocols.
Almost eight years ago, she was offering childcare professionals with assistance and guidance, but after being advised to scale her home-based childcare center, from merely just a handful of children, to an actual student center, which now houses 112 students, she was well on her way.
“Most people start a business for income,” she said. “I started [mine] for the impact.”

Childcare University
Maxwell recently launched Childcare University, which aims to prepare those with aspirations of starting their own childcare businesses, in areas of early childhood education and development tactics, best practices and child safety protocols, like CPR, AED, First Aid and PQAS professional development and instructional programs as well.
The curriculum includes early childhood education courses, divided into four different programs, highlighted by two flagship programs. The first, Technical Educational Assistance, or ‘T.E.A.’, which offers skill training and mentoring for early learning and school-age facilities, and ‘C.A.S.H.’ (Custom Analytical Solutions and Help), which is centered on outcomes, both programmatic and personal.
“How do you help children gain knowledge? How do you help the child, as a whole? Emotions, physical, all of that is so important in childcare,” said Maxwell.
