Things to Consider When Buying Drill Bits

Tools that are used to create holes by removing materials are called drill bits. These work in circular cross-sections to produce holes. Various drill bit types come in various shapes and sizes. The drill bit that is compatible with a particular metal is attached to a drill to make holes in a workpiece.

Discover multiple types of drill bits in this blog and pick the right one for your endeavor and the material you are drilling.

Types of Drill Bits Materials

The materials of the drill bits and the finishes that are given to them play a crucial role in their performance. Take a look at the most commonly used materials and finishes of drill bits:

  • The high-speed steel drill bits are best-fitted for drilling hard substances like timber, fiberglass, PVC as well as delicate metals such as aluminum.
  • Another type of drill bits is the Cobalt drill bits. These are incredibly tough and dissipate heat instantly. Tough metals like stainless steel are difficult to create holes and cobalt drill bits are used for boring them.
  • The Black oxide-coated offer corrosion resistance and increased durability. These type of drill bits are proven to last longer than basic HSS drill bits and works efficiently on different materials like metal, hard and softwoods, PVC, and fiberglasses.
  • On the other hand, the Titanium-coated HSS drill bits are known for the less friction they produce. These are also and last longer compared to the basic HSS drill bits. These can be used on wood, metal, fiberglass as well as PVC.
  • The sharpest among the materials are the Carbide-tipped drill bits. They stay sharp for a longer period of life than steel, HSS, or titanium drill bits. Their sharpness makes them the best choice as drill bits for concrete and drill bits for tiles.

Various drill bits types: Sizes and Shapes

  • Twisted Drill Bits: These are the most common type of drill bits available in the markets. Mostly used in homes, they work effectively on wood, plastic, and light metal surfaces.

  • Brad Pointed Drill Bits: The brad point drill bits are specifically designed for boring wood. The brad attached to the center of the bit helps it drill wood with precision and channels away from any dust and extra substances present in the holes.

  • Auger Drill Bits: These are also used for wood boring. They are characterized by solid centers and screw tips. Auger drill bits can bore clean holes quickly.

  • Self Feed Drill Bits: The self-feed drill bits are mostly used in wood surfaces. Unlike other drill bits types, these are more compact and don’t have standard flutes.

  • Installer Drill Bits: The installer drill bits, as the name suggests are particularly useful in installing wiring. The small hole present in the bit can help you install wires through it and draw it back through the hole that has been drilled.

  • Spade Drill Bits: Also called the paddle drill bits, these are mostly used for boring large diameter holes in wood. Their sharp edges ensure steady and neat boring.

  • Forstner Drill Bits: If you are looking for the best drill bit that can create flat bottomed holes, the Forstner drill bit is the right option. Their structure allows the creation of overlapping holes and precise positioning.

  • Tile Drill Bits: These are the right type of drill bits for tiles. Their carbide tips are best suited for drilling tiles with lesser chances of chips and cracks. However, it is important to check the specifications of the tile before starting to drill.

While there are numerous tools that can be used for drilling and boring available in the markets, it is best to do your research before purchasing any.
