Thermage vs. Ultherapy: What Are the Differences?

If you’re looking for ways to reduce skin laxity around your jawline and face, you have a few choices. One of those choices is a surgically invasive face-lift. There are other choices that aren’t as invasive and have zero downtime.

What are these choices? Ultherapy and Thermage.

What is Thermage? What is Ultherapy?

Keep reading for answers to these questions and a look at Thermage vs Ultherapy.

What Is Thermage?

If you’re looking for a painless procedure for loose skin that comes with no scalpels or downtime, Thermage fits the bill. Thermage is an anti-aging treatment that works by activating collagen production in your skin.

Thermage uses radiofrequency energy (RF) to stimulate new collagen production. The RF heats the dermal layers of the skin while the surface skin stays cool. This heat works as a collagen stimulant.

Thermage is FDA-approved and there are few if any side effects while being a pain-free treatment. It’s not only for your face.

You can use Thermage on your abdomen, upper arms, legs, and buttocks too. Thermage isn’t for the neck and décolleté area.

A few Thermage tips: Your treatment takes between 30 minutes and two hours, depending on what you’re having done. Arrive for your appointment with a clean face and no makeup or skin products on. Avoid any chemical treatments or peels a few weeks before your procedure.

Thermage costs vary depending on the type and amount of treatment you get. You can spend as little as $1,000 and as much as $5,000.

What Is Ultherapy?

When it comes to Thermage vs Ultherapy, Ultherapy is only different because it uses ultrasound instead of RF to stimulate collagen production. Ultrasound penetrates deeper into the dermal layer than RF.

Ultrasound waves target the muscular layer under the skin – the same muscles targeted in surgical lifts. Some people do feel a burning or tingling sensation that doctors treat with pain medication or a local anesthetic.

Is your area of concern the neck and décolleté area? Ultherapy is a good choice of treatment for those areas to tighten up sagging skin.

A few Ultherapy tips: As with Thermage, come to your appointment with a clean face and no makeup or skin products. The neck area can take up to an hour and about 20-30 minutes per area for other areas of treatment.

Ultherapy cost differs depending on the area or areas of treatment.

Thermage vs Ultherapy

So which is better in the Thermage vs Ultherapy debate? Both treatments are non-invasive, non-surgical treatments that reduce the signs of aging through activation of the skin’s collagen structure.

It comes down to a personal preference and the needs of the patient. Not everyone is a good candidate. If you have heavy sun damage, a history of heavy smoking, or acne, you’re not a good candidate.

Your doctor can tell you which procedure is best for you and if you’re a good candidate.
