In the ’80s, technology was just all about the basics. The emergence of the Sony Walkman changed the way people listen to music. The Casio Calculators became a handy way to compute numbers. The Nintendo Gameboy and NES became a teenage craze. And personal computers were basically electronic typewriters.
Back then, life was perceived to be simpler. The youth was told to stay in school, say their prayers, and drink their vitamins. When you graduate, work hard and you will make it. A successful man was defined by hard work, intelligence, and nothing else.
They are basic principles that still apply today. Except for the “nothing else” part at the end. And then the world entered a new decade, the 90’s. During this period, the way of life is moving fast-forward. The government, education. Even businesses, media, infrastructure, and many others are growing by leaps and bounds. The need for advancement became apparent.

The World Wide Web
Suddenly, the World Wide Web was born. When Tim Berners-Lee designed Enquire, it already functioned like the internet. But for an internal network of up to 10,000 computers only. But, in just 3 months after designing Enquire, another ingredient was added. This is known as the Hypertext Transfer Protocols also known as the HTTP. And then the internet became accessible in the world.
The Birth of WiFi
The ’90s was also the birth of an Operating System known as Linux. Then a processor known as Pentium was also created. This was also the era when a cross-platform, multi-channel, and database software known as Java was born. And started to capture the technological world on a global scale. And then in 1999, WiFi was born and changed the world forever.
WiFi created the most complete, connected network of computers that has ever existed. Wherever you are in the world, and at any time you can access a world of information. From entertainment, business, finance, sports, and all aspects of life. All information is accessible at the touch of your fingertips. You can use the wifi from any device as long as it is “wifi ready”.
And then the world entered the New Millennium. Technology in the year 2000 was an amazing decade for technology. This decade was the start of how the world has changed. Because it has established the use of broadband internet as a necessity. There are an estimated 21 million broadband users worldwide. This number continued to increase every year. New users shifted from the dial-up internet service of the ’90s to the broadband internet service.
This is the decade that gave us camera phones, Bluetooth technology, and USB flash drives. The iPod was Apple Computer’s first attempt to change how we listen to music forever. Instead of carrying cassette tapes and CDs, hundreds of songs are available in a single gadget. This decade is also the start of the video gaming revolution, social media, and more.
A huge amount of technology was released in the 2000s. Some of its main features are the ability to transfer information and images from one device to another. Suddenly this has become the foundation of changing the way we live today.
From business purposes to media productions, to personal and group events on the move. Technology in the new millennium has been perfect. And then the covid-19 pandemic came. Suddenly we are locked in our homes with few choices. Human movement is suddenly limited. Manpower lost its might. Will technology lose its edge too? Not so. In fact, technology had to take over. But it is beneficial to those who are used to it. But for your average, everyday common person, technology can get in the way.
So, here are practical ways to learn about technology:
Take Baby Steps
Nowadays if you ask anyone where to find this, how to do that, what is the meaning of this, the common answer will be to “google it”. Search engines such as Google are a good baby step into learning technology. Nowadays it is easy to get needed information online.
If you are a bookworm, and you love the library, Google can be your new friend. The hours you spend searching for catalogs will be limited to minutes of online surfing. If you want to cook, type any dish you want and get hundreds of ways to cook from the best chefs around the world.
Drop the Phone and Communicate through Apps
While in-home quarantine, social gatherings have become limited. Chances are you are missing your relatives and friends. It’s time to take advantage of mobile applications like Zoom and Skype. That way you can talk to them and see them at the same time. And not just one of them, but all of them. Group video calls are now possible.
Without leaving your house, you can talk to a medical doctor for your treatment. You can talk to experienced court reporters for legal matters. Even do workouts with your gym trainer. And talk to your friends from other countries all over the world, just be mindful of the time differences.
Technology is still a tool. Technology is here to stay forever. It may have taken over the world, but it is here to serve us. It can make our lives easy. And even with basic knowledge, you will enjoy technology.
