The most common faults of cooking stoves and ovens

An oven (gas or electric) is a household appliance that is used almost every day in every home. Unfortunately, heavy use will sooner or later lead to problems. If your stove refuses to work, and the electric oven does not heat, we recommend finding out the cause in advance, so that you do not have to call for help in appliance repair service for more serious repairs. In this article, you will also learn how to check if the heater in your oven has burned out.

Device does not heat up well

This problem is very common and is caused by a burned out lower heating element in the oven. To fix it, it is necessary to replace the faulty element.

How to check if the heater is burned out?

One of the most common signs of a burned heater is uneven heating of meat or pies. In the case of pies, this can be noticed more quickly: a burnt bottom – scorched top, or vice versa – device heats poorly on one side. Another sign of a burned heater may be a different temperature – i.e. the oven heats unevenly. In this case, it could be because the thermostat is burned out or a faulty knob.

Burnt fuses

You turn on your cooktop and “boom” – suddenly the lights go out and the power goes out – are the fuses blown? Blown fuses caused by an electric stove or cooktop are also quite common. It is the result of wet wires (due to a boiling pot, for example) or a functional switch. It can be the result of a burnout of one of the heaters.

It doesn’t heat up at all

There may be times when the oven doesn’t heat at all. And if this is not the result of burned out heaters, there could be two reasons. First, check the timer. Second, check the thermostat. For mechanical clocks, set it to a position other than zero. For electronic clocks, check to see if the time displayed is blinking. Turn the heater and see if you hear a click indicating that the contacts are on/off. If you don’t hear a click, the thermostat needs to be replaced. Can’t handle it yourself? Small fire at the gas stove

This is the result of clogged burner nozzles. This can easily happen because their holes are only a fraction of a millimeter long. To fix the gas stove malfunction, it is enough to clean the burner nozzles. For the future, it is worth doing this regularly to avoid such problems. If you have an electric cooktop, you may encounter a malfunction where two cooking zones on one side of the cooktop do not work. This is the result of a blown fuse on one of the phases (the cooktop must be connected to two phases). As a result only one side of the hob works.

Short-circuit in control module

A short circuit in the control module or timer may be the cause of an oven malfunction. In the case of overvoltage, the capacitor or another part of the module may have burned out. In the case of touch panel control modules, diodes are often jammed or dirty, resulting in no response to button presses. There can be many symptoms of damage, but one thing is certain – if the module doesn’t work, the oven won’t work either. The problem with the control module is that it is difficult to repair it yourself without much experience. In this matter, it is worth trusting the professionals. Even if you replace the heater, the oven still does not work? Perhaps the relay on the module has burned out.
