The Green and Sustainable Side of the Oil Industry

Even though very few people would describe the oil industry as “green”, this description might not be that wrong after all. Just because most companies in this industry don’t even consider being sustainable and green doesn’t mean there aren’t those who are promoting the eco-friendly approach to business and are doing whatever they can to change the dominant paradigm. If you’re interested in learning how the oil industry can become greener, or even want to take part in this process, here are a few things you need to know.

Switching to renewable energy

Solar energy, wind power, and hydropower are just some of the ideas that can replace your traditional power sources and help every company in the world become more sustainable and green. This is something that people in the oil industry know as well, which is why more and more of them have been switching to renewable energy and using it to become eco-friendly.

Future of renewable energy

Oil major oil companies of the 21st century are using this sort of energy as we speak, and that’s the decision all other companies need to be following as well. Instead of wasting energy and using more power than they need, these companies are now understanding the importance and value of renewable energy sources. Finally, this switch comes with at least two huge benefits – on the one hand, you have companies that are making the entire industry more sustainable, while, on the other, they’re doing a great favor to the entire world, so it’s a win-win situation we can all benefit from.

Using the right equipment

Updating the technology, tools, apps, and equipment you’re using daily is something each company has to do as often as possible. The people running these companies are often not too happy to spend money on things like equipment, which is why tons of businesses in the oil industry are still using ancient equipment. The problem isn’t the age of their tech, of course, but the fact that old equipment is less sustainable and green than the new alternatives.

Finding simple solutions

That’s why investing money into new tech is always a good idea – this will help you take your productivity to the next level and essentially make more money in less time. But, in addition to that, you’ll manage to cut your costs and make you more sustainable, and that’s the end-goal we should all be striving for. You don’t have to invest too much all the time – on the contrary, simple things can mean quite a lot, as long as you know how to use them. For instance, if you replace your outdated valves with an efficient double offset butterfly valve, you’ll boost your productivity and your sustainability at once, and that’s every entrepreneur’s dream.

Cutting down emissions

This might easily be the biggest challenge the oil industry is facing, and the fact is that this process is neither simple nor easy. Cutting down CO2 emissions could take a long time and turn into a complex procedure that may not even end up working in the end. However, if each of us manages to make this happen, together we’re going to introduce a massive change into our own companies and, at the same time, the entire industry.

Ways to minimize emissions

There’s no easy way to do this, and the fact is that each company has to create its methodology for cutting down emissions, using as many different approaches as possible. First, they need to minimize flaring and introduce a system that will track flaring across the world. Also, they need to reconsider how they’re using their resources and how they can control emissions at the very source. In the end, they need to stick to the new flaring rules and regulations that will help them make sure nothing bad is going to continue happening in the future. Again, this all takes a ton of time and dedication, but it’s a process we need to focus on right now – before it’s too late.

The oil industry might not be the greenest in the world, but it’s not as unsustainable as people think it is. It’s all about finding simple and effective eco-friendly solutions that are already around us, and introducing them to your company as well!
