A watch is a personal thing. Everyone has their own taste and is looking for a unique design and watch style. That’s why we don’t want what is a good or bad watch, but what the aspects are of a quality watch in general. And how these elements of a quality watch are recognizable.
Table of Contents
A quality watch is in any case made of stainless steel. A Hugo Boss watch (translated to Dutch: Hugo Boss horloge) made of titanium or ceramic is harder / better, but those watches also have a more expensive price tag. Stainless steel cannot be affected by moisture and perspiration compared to “normal” steel. Skin irritation is also rare with a stainless steel watch.
In addition, the weight of the watch can also be a sign of quality. It gives an indication of how solid the steel used is and what kind of timepiece has been used.
Furthermore, the better watch brands use 316L stainless steel, this type of steel has a higher degree of purity. The type of stainless steel and PVD coating is not mentioned on the watch. You can often read this in the package leaflet after purchasing the product. To be sure of the type of stainless steel, you can always contact the seller. But if it is a more expensive brand, you can assume that it will be fine.
A quality gentleman’s watch (translated to Dutch: heren horloge) always has sapphire glass, like a Seiko watch. Of course it depends on the kind of purpose of your watch. Sapphire glass remains clear and scratch-free after frequent (heavy) use. Crystal glass or mineral glass is sufficient for an average watch. Furthermore, a watch with this type of glass is often € 20 cheaper, but is also more sensitive to scratches. If sapphire glass is used, this will appear on the dial or back of the watch.
Water resistance is in the same breath associated with a quality watch. Almost nothing is more harmful to a watch than water damage. Waterproofing is therefore inextricably linked to a luxury and / or quality watch. As with materials and movements, the water resistance is also in varying degrees.
10 ATM water resistance means that the watch can withstand 100 meters (or 10 bar) of pressure. This makes it an excellent watch for swimming. 5 ATM (showering) and 3 ATM (washing hands) are also the number of degrees of water resistance. A watch must be at least 3 ATM water resistant to provide any comfort. The water resistance is also often indicated on the back of the selected watch.
Finally, we can say that a quality watch, besides the above mentioned characteristics, has a nice finish. This is the difference between a cheap and affordable watch. It should feel comfortable and nicely finished. The details have to form together a compelling, attractive whole. You don’t see any unusual bumps, loose index or some other form of poor workmanship? Then we can also speak in appearance of a good quality watch.
