The Effects of Diabetes on Your Body

Among the more common diseases that can affect the body is diabetes. At the moment, it’s believed that more than 34 million people throughout the U.S. are suffering from diabetes, which amounts to around 10 percent of the total population in the country. If you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes or believe that you may have this disease, it’s important to understand the numerous effects that it can have on your body.

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes occurs when the blood glucose levels in your body are too high. It’s important to understand that blood glucose is the primary source of energy that your body has and is taken from the various foods that you eat. Insulin is an essential hormone that’s found within the pancreas and is designed to get glucose into your cells to be converted into useful energy. However, it’s possible for your body to stop producing enough insulin, which means that the glucose would remain in your blood without being transferred to the cells where it could be converted into energy. While being diagnosed with diabetes can be frightening, there is a wide range of effective treatments available to you that can help you properly manage the condition and keep most of the health effects at bay. You can even order insulin for sale online. With the right approach, you can lead a normal life.

When you have a high amount of glucose in your blood, you may eventually start to experience side effects of the condition. Keep in mind that diabetes doesn’t have a cure, which is why it’s highly recommended that you take the necessary steps to improve your diet and overall health if you’ve been diagnosed with this condition. There are two different types of diabetes that you can be diagnosed with, which include type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

What are the Effects of It on the Body?

There are many effects that diabetes has on the body, the primary of which include excessive urination, fatigue, high blood pressure, glaucoma, nerve damage, and dry skin that may have a cracked appearance. Your risk of heart disease, kidney damage, and stroke could also be higher if you have been diagnosed with diabetes. These effects will worsen over time if your diabetes is left untreated. While this disease can’t be properly cured, the symptoms can be managed.

How Is It Controlled?

There are a variety of different treatments that should be used to keep your diabetes in check. When you’re diagnosed with diabetes, your doctor should create a treatment plan that will manage your symptoms. Along with routinely looking at your blood glucose levels, the treatment plan should also include a combination of exercise, diet, and medications. The insulin that you’ll be required to take is available in five different types to accommodate the different needs that patients have.

For instance, rapid-acting insulin takes effect in several minutes but only lasts for 2-4 hours. On the other hand, long-acting insulin takes effect after 1-2 hours but lasts for upwards of 24 hours. Many people who require insulin use a diabetes insulin pump to administer the insulin throughout the day. These pumps work by placing a catheter into the body for easy distribution of insulin. The catheters only need to be replaced every three days or so, which is a clear advantage over standard insulin injections.

Matt Schmidt, the Co-Founder of Diabetes Life Solutions also mentions ” a person’s level of control of their diabetes has a direct impact on the premiums they pay for life insurance.  Type 1 diabetes life insurance rates are always more expensive, but if you can show insurance companies you have a history of well controlled A1C readings, you’d pay 25% to 40% less than a person with elevated A1C readings.”

While being diagnosed with diabetes can be frightening, there are a wide range of effective treatments available to you that can help you properly manage the condition and keep most of the health effects at bay. With the right approach, you can lead a normal life.
