The Different Types of Psoriasis Explained

Media personality Kim Kardashian West, actor Jon Lovitz, singer LeAnn Rimes, and professional golfer Phil Michelson all have something in common. These individuals all have psoriasis, an autoimmune disease that causes the skin to develop scaly patches. The patches may cause discomfort as they can be itchy and painful.

This chronic skin disorder can be found on different parts of the body such as the feet, hands, and elbows. There are several different types of psoriasis that you should be familiar with. You can check out our guide here to learn more.

The Five Types of Psoriasis

Plaque Psoriasis

The most common type of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis. This type of psoriasis is characterized by raised patches on the skin that are red and thick. The patches may often have a silver or white scaly layer that covers them.

The patches may range from 1 to 10 centimeters wide but can be bigger. For the most part, plaque psoriasis may appear on the elbows, knees, and scalp. Refrain from ScratchSleeves the scales as doing so can cause the symptoms to worsen. Consider using psoriasis cream.

Guttate Psoriasis

Guttate psoriasis is the second most common type of psoriasis. This type of psoriasis is characterized by small red spots on the skin, although they may have more of a pink to salmon color. These spots tend to be separate and drop-shaped.

Guttate psoriasis tends to appear on the torso and the arms and legs, but can also appear on the face and scalp. Unlike the spots associated with plaque psoriasis, the spots associated with this type of psoriasis are less thicker.

Inverse Psoriasis

Inverse psoriasis usually appears as red, smooth patches. The patches do not have scales. This type of psoriasis is not usually visible to others as the patches often appear in the groin, under the armpits and breast, and in the buttocks.

Skin-on-skin contact can make this type of psoriasis feel uncomfortable. Sweating can also make the symptoms worse. Persons who have inverse psoriasis may also have other different types of psoriasis on other parts of the skin.

Pustular Psoriasis

One of the most severe psoriasis types is pustular psoriasis. This type of psoriasis is characterized by white pustules surrounded by red skin. Pustular psoriasis can be observed on isolated parts of the body or cover a majority of the skin’s surface.

Scaling can form when the pustules come together. Pus can form as a result; however, it is not noninfectious, but can cause symptoms such as fever and chills.

Erythrodermic Psoriasis

Erythrodermic psoriasis is a rare type of skin disease. It resembles severe burns. Persons with this type of psoriasis may be hospitalized due to high body temperature.

It is a widespread form of psoriasis. Large portions of the body may have the red and scaly skin that is associated with erythrodermic psoriasis.

Different Types of Psoriasis

The different types of psoriasis have different symptoms. Persons diagnosed with psoriasis experience a lot of discomfort. It is important to apply cream on the areas affected.
