The Brief Guide That Makes Conducting an IT Audit Simple

Is your company’s information technology infrastructure as strong and secure as it should be?

You might not know the answer to that question if it’s been a long time now since your last IT audit. Conducting regular IT audits is important because it’ll let you know what kind of condition your IT infrastructure is in.

As a small business owner, it’ll be your job to schedule IT audits as often as you can. Part of business ownership is having an IT audit done at least once each year, if not more often than that.

Want to make carrying out an IT audit as simple as possible? Here is a guide that will help you do it.

Decide Whether to Do an Internal or External IT Audit

Do you have an internal IT department that can carry out an IT audit for you? Or would you prefer to bring an external managed IT company on board to assist you?

You’re welcome to take either approach to conduct an IT audit. But even if you do happen to have an internal IT department, it’s usually a good idea to consider going through an external IT audit at least occasionally.

A third-party company will be able to find the less-obvious faults within your IT infrastructure. They’ll also be able to break down things like the benefits of asset recovery for your company from an outsider’s perspective.

Create a List of Your Company’s Biggest IT-Related Risks

Prior to conducting an IT audit, it’s always smart to list your company’s largest IT-related risks. This list might include risks like:

  • Malware
  • Ransomware
  • Denial of Service (DoS)
  • Phishing
  • Malicious misuse

By putting together a list like this, you’ll guarantee that your IT audit will evaluate how your company’s IT infrastructure will respond to these types of risks.

Test Each and Every Security Measure Within Your IT System

Your IT infrastructure should include a series of security measures that are in place to stop you from having to deal with the kinds of risks we just mentioned. Some of these security measures should be things like:

  • Antivirus software
  • Firewalls
  • Regular data backup
  • Server security
  • Multi-factor authentication

It’s important for your IT audit to put each of these security measures to the test. Either your IT department or your third-party managed IT company should have tests that they can run on these security measures to gauge their responses to different types of attacks.

Adjust Your IT System Based on the Findings of an IT Audit

Conducting an IT audit is obviously important. But it’s just as important to take what you learn from an IT audit and use it to adjust your IT infrastructure as a whole.

You should be able to pinpoint the weak spots in your IT infrastructure following an IT audit. It’ll give you an opportunity to spring into action so that you can do something about them.

Arrange to Conduct an IT Audit Sometime Soon

An IT audit shouldn’t be something that’s seen as optional for your company. It should be something that you look forward to doing so that you’re able to test your IT system as a whole early and often.

Now that you have a better idea as to how to conduct an IT audit, you should arrange to perform one soon. It’ll give you a glimpse into just how strong and secure your IT infrastructure really is.
