The Brief and Only Oral Surgery Aftercare Guide You’ll Ever Need

So you’ve finally had your oral surgery, and you’ve come out on the other side. Congratulations!

It may be tempting to dive back into old and comforting habits after an intensive procedure like wisdom teeth removal or getting dental implants, but avoid the urge. After your surgery, it’s important to follow some key instructions in order to avoid pain, reduce the risk of injury, and get on the road to recovery. Here’s what to know about what you should and shouldn’t do after your procedure.

Things to Do After Your Oral Surgery

First and foremost, make sure to follow any specific instructions from your oral surgeon. Depending on the type of surgery you’ve had, they may have recommendations tailored to your dental aftercare plan and oral treatment. However, in general, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Get Some Rest

The day of and the day after the surgery, you should plan to get some rest.

Most oral surgeries will result in mild to moderate swelling in your mouth and face, numbness and pain, and even minor bleeding. Take time to rest and recuperate in order to get back to proper health. Don’t forget to prop your head up to reduce bleeding, take your pain medications, and apply ice as needed!

Eat Soft Foods

While you’re recovering, make sure to eat soft foods that won’t hurt your teeth. This can include soups, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, and ice cream.

Maintain Your Oral Health

This is where you’ll want to follow your surgeon’s recommendations with care, as they may have you avoid cleaning the surgical area of your mouth for a day or so. You may also be advised to do a salt rinse a few times per day.

However, it’s worth noting that you shouldn’t neglect your dental hygiene in the days following your surgery. This is especially true because your oral health translates to heart and body health as well!

Things Not to Do After Your Oral Surgery

Again, the best dentist will offer specific recommendations for you depending on the type of dental treatment they’ve performed. However, these are a few general things to avoid in the days after your surgery.

Exert Yourself

It might be tempting to jump right back into work and exercise, but this can end up lengthening your recovery period. Instead, get plenty of rest!

Avoid Certain Foods and Drinks

If your mouth is still numb, it’s a good idea to avoid extremely hot foods and drinks, as it can be hard to feel whether or not you’re burning your mouth! In addition, avoid hard or crunchy foods, which can impact the area of your surgery. It’s a good idea to avoid chewing these foods in the location of your oral surgery for around six weeks.

Don’t Smoke or Drink

For 24 hours after your surgery, you’ll need to avoid both smoking and drinking. These habits can interfere with your healing and recovery process.

Get on the Road to Recovery

Recovering from your oral surgery can be a lengthy and tiring process, but it’s important to give your body the time it needs to recuperate. Following the tips above—as well as the specific recommendations of your dentist—can help jump-start the healing process and get you back on your feet fast. Take it easy, and be sure to check in with your dental team if you experience any complications.
