Sunroom VS Solarium: A Comparison

Home renovations are getting more on the customised end of the spectrum as of late, since now homeowners always consider the market value of their home whenever they renovate or make additions to their home. This makes your home a potential investment for the future, since the prices of land and real estate will almost never be on the low. Therefore, when you make renovations, you need to consider how the addition would impact the value of your home, other than aspects like the aesthetic or practicality.

Many homes in colder areas are often equipped with a sunroom. As the name suggests, this is a room where people can enjoy the sun without actually being outdoors. It shares a ceiling with the rest of the house but the windows are made of glass.

A solarium is a type of sunroom which is made almost completely of glass, including the ceiling and the walls. They are more expensive to build than traditional sunrooms, and of course, can provide the maximum amount of light and heat. Think of it as a greenhouse for humans, if you will.

A lot of times, people get confused between sunroom VS solarium, since they are very similar is their design, practicality and use. While a solarium is a variant of a sunroom, it has a number of personal benefits as well. We shall analyse the most common pointers about these two types of rooms as follows:

  • A sunroom can be used all year round, but a solarium cannot be practical during the hottest months of the year.
  • A sunroom does not provide a full view of the outdoor environment, but a solarium does. If your room faces the backyard or any lush scenery, then it is better to invest in a solarium. A solarium can also be used as a place to grow more plants.
  • Sunrooms are cheaper than solariums, since the latter are equipped with thermal designs and vents to prevent overheating. A solarium offers very little energy efficiency in comparison to a sunroom.
  • Solariums require more expenses in maintenance, since they require professional cleaners for cleaning the glass. The glass roof which connects to the rest of the house requires proper and regular maintenance.
  • Before you decide on what kind of sunroom you would want, it is important to know about the practicality of these. A sunroom can be used all year round, and it requires far less in maintenance expenses as compared to a solarium.
  • A solarium, on the other hand, adds a unique architectural element in your house and gives it that “wow” factor.
  • They both provide a good return on the initial expenses; however, the warranty of a sunroom is much longer and can be transferred to new owners, which is not the same for a solarium. Glass replacement and roof maintenance need to be considered before settling on any one option.

We hope we have been able to help you in making a decision on a sunroom VS solarium. You may set up an appointment with your contractor to know more about these.
