Steps To Take After Getting Hit By A Car On The Road

A clash between a car and a pedestrian can be more devastating than two cars. This is because while a driver is protected by the steel frame of their car, a pedestrian usually has no exterior protection. Therefore, they are more vulnerable to injuries that can impact them for life.

When pedestrians get hit by a car or slammed into the sidewalk, they may experience broken bones, internal damage, and concussions. You must seek compensation and hold the responsible party accountable for their irresponsible behavior.

Check yourself for injuries.

You must check your body for physical injuries. Check for cuts, scratches, or pain in part of your body. If you have sustained injuries, do not panic. Call emergency services and try to move to a safer side of the road.

Call 911.

Witnesses of accidents usually make a call to the ambulance and the police. However, if they have not, you should do so yourself or ask someone to do it for you. Creating an official police report can be beneficial for your case. Similarly, getting your injuries checked by a medical professional is also critical.

Do not admit guilt or discuss fault.

Make a note to yourself to not admit guilt, even if you think you were at fault. Similarly, you should not also engage in blaming the other party. When you blame the other party, the police or the insurance company may want to know “why” you think the other party was at fault. While discussing their fault, you may say something that can be misinterpreted and used against you in court.

Get the driver’s information.

If possible, approach the driver and ask for their details, including their name, contact number, address, license plate number, and car model. Refrain from discussing anything about the accident or trying to resolve the issue on your own. Keep the conversation strictly about information exchange.

Contact your insurance company.

If you carry car insurance, you should call and inform them about the accident. Even though this was not exactly a car accident as you were a pedestrian in the situation, most car insurance policies usually cover these types of accidents.

Talk to witnesses.

Witnesses can give valuable information regarding pedestrian accidents as the fault is usually clear in such cases. Having people who can support your story can be beneficial to speed up the legal process and maximize your compensation.

In most car-pedestrian accidents, pedestrians usually have the right of way. However, this does not mean that the law would not ask you for evidence. Do not let the other party take advantage of your lack of legal knowledge, and hire an attorney today.
