Steps to Take After Being Injured in a Car Accident

An overwhelming 3 million Americans will be injured in a car accident this year.

While that’s not a statistic you want to be a part of, you need to be aware of what to do after a crash.

If you don’t take certain steps, then you might end up making your injuries worse. On top of that, you could be putting any future compensation at risk, too.

Knowledge is power, so keep reading to get informed on how to respond after a car accident injury.

1. Call the Police

When you’re in an accident, the first thing you need to do is check yourself for injuries. Then, verify the status of any passengers. If there’s an emergency, then you need to call 911 right away.

Otherwise, you need to ensure your vehicle is safe where it’s stopped. If you’re in danger, then it’s okay to move to the shoulder or away from oncoming traffic.

Once you’ve ensured your safety, you need to speak with the driver of the other vehicle. First, make sure they’re okay. Then, explain that you need to reach out to the police. Don’t let them convince you that you don’t need to take this step.

Authorities will come to the scene and document the accident. They’ll begin an investigation while you move on to step two.

2. Go to the Doctor

After your accident, you might need immediate care. If that’s the case, you could get on-site treatment from first-responders. Even if you do get this care, it’s still important to go to the doctor afterward.

Going to the doctor not only helps you get better, but it protects your legal rights, too. It shows that you took reasonable steps to ensure your injury wasn’t aggravated or made worse.

3. Consider Your Options for Compensation

Once you’ve filed a report with the police and gone to the doctor, you’ll likely find you’ve lost a lot. Your property is likely damaged, you’ve gotten injured, and you may have missed work, too.

That means it’s time for you to research your options for compensation. For minor claims, you can seek compensation from your insurance provider. In other cases, you might need to file a personal injury lawsuit.

4. Focus on Your Recovery

Car accident injuries vary from minor to life-altering. Depending on your situation, medical care might be straight forward. In other cases, you’ll need long-term treatment to recover.

Make sure you focus on your physical recovery after a crash. Don’t neglect your health.
