As more people grow concerned about their footprint on the planet, the spotlight is falling on the party industry because of one item that is not as innocuous as you might think: the balloon. First invented nearly 200 years ago, it has become a staple at parties, weddings, and other events. Yet, those same balloons that add color to festivities take approximately 450 years to decompose. How can hosts continue to decorate with style for their guests while still helping the environment? Enter South Bay Pop, whose new line of DIY, eco-friendly balloon garlands and arches, reusable foil balloons, and backdrops are helping the party to go on.
Co-founders Alexis Reardon and Tanya Hamiton explain that South Bay Pop initially began as a creative outlet and as a fun activity to do with their daughters. “We loved that by pairing different styles and sizes of balloons together in unique designs, we could transform any room and raise an event’s fun factor and energy,” Alexis says. “We also cared deeply about the planet and wanted to make parties more sustainable by cutting down on the number of balloons in landfills. So, we incorporated biodegradable balloons and reusable foil balloons into our garlands and arches.”
As word grew about the uniqueness and sustainability of South Bay Pop’s balloon designs for weddings, Halloween, Christmas, and graduations, requests began coming in from other parts of the United States. However, Tanya explains that before she and Alexis offered their products online as a DIY option, they had to be sure that they would be just as beautiful as if she and Alexis had installed them themselves.
“Quality matters,” Tanya says. “The last thing we wanted was for a customer to open our ‘Deck the Halls’ or ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ kit, for example, and have problems installing it. What a letdown that would be! Each of our 19 kits had to be professional and high quality, so we put a lot of thought into each one.”
Each kit comes with everything a customer needs in order to create a balloon garland or arch, including reusable foil balloons, biodegradable balloons, a balloon strip to hang all of the balloons and glue dots, and step-by-step directions. Once blown up, the garland or arch can be positioned anywhere the customer prefers. Balloons come in different materials, shapes, sizes, and colors according to the kit’s theme. Kits can be shipped to anywhere in the United States.
“We are excited about releasing our DIY line of balloons so that more people can bring the South Bay Pop style to their party in any state and contribute to a healthier planet,” says Tanya. “Please reach out to us with any questions about using our balloons to decorate your event. In particular, feel free to share with us your great ideas for new designs so that we can make our garlands and arches even more fun for you and your guests.”
